Sierra Canyon Defeats Christ the King in front of Star-Studded Crowd
Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony and even Kim Kardashian were in attendance for the highly anticipated matchup between the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers and the Christ the King Royals out of New York. With the celebrities and live ESPN broadcast, this wasn't your average high school basketball game. The lights couldn’t be brighter, bringing out the best of both teams, but Sierra Canyon was able to get a 62-51 victory at home.
Five-star recruit junior forward Isaiah Elohim led Sierra Canyon with 17 points. When asked what he brings to the table he responded, “I am aggressive and could get to the rim. I can pass and play both sides of the ball.”
The Trailblazers are used to the big games and it showed early in the first, as they got out to an early five point lead. Senior team captain Bronny James, who finished with 12 points, got a big dunk after a steal that made the crowd go crazy. Junior forward Qin Pang got some tough baskets to make the score 12-7 going into the second.
Sophomore forward Kiyan Anthony, son of former NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony, got the Royals offense going with a corner three to begin the quarter. Sierra Canyon’s defense helped them stretch their lead to eight points with plays from senior forward Jimmy Oladokun leading to easy baskets. Pang barely missed a three-pointer to end the half, making the score 27-17 going into the break.
The defense was still a big point of emphasis for the Trailblazers, with multiple blocks to start the third. James took over the quarter with a corner three and a crazy euro that was shown in slow-mo on national television. But Anthony responded with an and-one layup after an offensive rebound to cut the Royals deficit to eight to end the quarter.
Elohim was huge down the stretch, making another midrange jumper early in the fourth. With the help of James, they were able to keep the lead around eight points for the remainder of the game. Anthony did hit a deep three late but it still wasn’t enough.
The Trailblazer matchup will be against Lebron James alma mater St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish on Saturday at 6:00 PM.
