Campbell Hall Sails Away to Victory Over Crossroads, Ballard Posts Double-Double

The Crossroads Roadrunners and Campbell Hall Vikings met on a last Wednesday night for a Gold Coast League opener, with the Vikings riding a 10 point rally in the fourth quarter to edge out a 50-36 home win. The Vikings were entering Wednesday trying to right their ship, as their dominant 8-2 start diminished drastically after a four game losing streak. Against the red hot 13-3 Roadrunners, Campbell Hall was looking to set a new tone heading into their first game in the year 2023.

The first quarter saw Crossroads gain an early advantage, despite both defenses making a statement to start the game. It was Crossroads junior center Lulu Chahinian (averaging 11.3 entering the game) that got things going early, scoring seven points in the first quarter. The second quarter saw the emergence of Campbell Hall senior center Alline Ballard, who went from scoring just three points in the first quarter to becoming the first player all game to reach double digit points. Manning the middle, Ballard did her best to shut down her opposition in the post, while leading solo fastbreak opportunities repeatedly. Ballard went on to dominate on both sides of the court, finishing with an impressive statline of 20/13/3 with five steals and two blocks, while shooting a solid 8/19 (42%) from the field and making two free throws.

Through the majority of the second quarter and second half of the game, the Vikings held on to a firm double digit lead, until the Roadrunners stormed back to cut the deficit to just four points. After landing in foul trouble, the Vikings were able to score 10 unanswered points, extending their lead to the eventual final score of 50-36.

Despite paltry shooting numbers from the field, the Vikings defense held up their own, producing a whopping 13 steals in the contest, with five coming from both Ballard and G Madison Holden. Campbell Hall with the win extends now to 9-6, while the Roadrunners fall to 13-4 on the season. The Vikings will be home Tuesday, January 10 against the Brentwood Eagles with tip-off slated for 5:30.
