Gritty Play Leads the Way for Faith Baptist, Come Out with 66-34 Win over Lancaster Baptist

Looking to make it three straight victories, the Faith Baptist Contenders played host to the Lancaster Baptist Eagles in a Friday night matchup. Playing their first home game of the 2023 season, the Contenders planned on carrying the momentum they gained from their 32 point win against the Vazquez Mustangs the day prior. Right at the start of tip off, the game became a highly defensive affair.

Throughout the first quarter, Faith Baptist smothered their opponent in the paint on defense. They allowed only one player, Sophomore Sammy Flores, to make up for all of Lancaster’s scoring in the first quarter, draining two threes. The Contenders let it be known that they were not letting any easy passes get through, tipping multiple inbound passes right out, as well as creating early forced turnovers within their opponent’s backfield. Lancaster Baptist held their ground in the first quarter, keeping things tight with a 10-6 Faith Baptist score after one quarter. From there, the Contenders broke loose in the second quarter, finding their stride on offense en route to 25 points within that frame.

Having given up 16 points in the first half, Faith Baptist made finding any flow on offense difficult for Lancaster Baptist, as the Eagles netted just five points in the third quarter and experienced a five and a half minute scoring drought in the fourth. Faith Baptist kept their offense moving with ease, knocking down multiple shots from the outside with ease. Most of the heavy lifting was relied on Freshman Andre O’Daniel, who provided with multiple key shots down the latter half of the game, with Junior Max Alwag playing relentless defense, as he gave Lancaster struggles with simply inbounding the ball. Faith Baptist lit up over 30 points in each half, knocking down Lancaster Baptist with the final score of 66-34 and improving their record to 12-5 on the season.

Looking now to make it four straight victories, the Contenders will host the Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals tonight, with game time scheduled for 6:30 pm in Heritage League play.
