Around the Valley Report for January 9th

The slate of games that were scheduled for the 9th were scaled back because of heavy rains to pound the VST region. But the Notre Dame girls soccer team improved to 11-1-4 overall after a 3-1 road win against the Harvard Westlake Wolverines to continue Mission League action behind two goals from freshman Corinne Rodriguez. Rodriguez found the back of the net off a bad pass from a HW defender in the 46th minute and later scored her second goal off a free kick in the 57th minute to secure the win. As for the boys of Harvard Westlake, they won 2-0 on the road against Notre Dame behind goals from juniors Josh Barnavon (23rd minute) and Olashubomi Iriafen (50th minute) to improve to 12-0 overall on the season. The boys of Harvard Westlake will be back at home against Chaminade in the battle of the top two teams in the Mission League with kick-off slated for 5 this Wednesday night.

El Camino Real and Taft boys soccer went back and forth in a high scoring affair against each other in the Battle of Woodland Hills supremacy. The Royals of El Camino went up early two goals, then Taft scored the next three goals to take a 3-2 advantage. Anthony Villa responds right back for the Royals to tie the match at 3-3 and the Royals win it 5-3 in the end. Villa tricks Taft with 3 goals, while Pedro Perez nets 2 goals for the Royals (5-2-4). Senior striker Ryan Quinn also produced a hat trick of his own for the visiting 10-6 Toreadors.

Canoga Park boys basketball remains perfect still against Valley Mission League teams after a 62-45 victory against Van Nuys. Junior Anthony Nunez led the Hunters with 20 points, with 18 points by senior captain Elijah Galingan and Abel Hernandez put in 13 points.

Van Nuys girls basketball easily took down the Hunters of Canoga Park 59-8 on Monday behind a team-high from Katya Tapia, who had 14 points and the Jasmine duo of Ruiz and Alejandre had 12 points and 10 points respectively. Karen Grewal had ten points.

Grant boys basketball picked up its 11th victory of the season with a 105-46 over East Valley League rival North Hollywood Huskies and this is the Lancers fourth win of over 100 points scored joining Arleta, Monroe and Chavez. Byron Mendez poured out 33 points - thanks to TEN made 3-pointers only two shy of the school record. DJ Gaines finished with 16 points and Brian Colindres with 11 points to head into their next league game on Wednesday at home versus Verdugo Hills, who are also unbeaten in the EVL, tip-off is at 5:30pm.
