Castillas’ tied the school record with nine 3’s and Banerjee reached the 1,000 point mark in a doubleheader sweep of the Hoover Tornadoes on Senior Night
The Burbank High basketball teams celebrated their seniors against Hoover last Friday night. The girls were up first and they honored the fabulous careers of four outstanding seniors in Shelby Cribbs, Karen Casillas, Heghine Grigoryan and Rheanna Ocampo and in the end won 73-18. Casillas led the Bulldog attack with her second 35 point game of the season, while two sport athlete Shelby Cribbs scored 14 points and Sahara Jackson with eight points.
Burbank coach Kris Jabourian shared his thoughts on how the game went with “Senior Night was a special moment and not one girl had a GPA below 3.5,” Jabourian went on to say that Castillas is a special talent. Cribbs, who's committed to play softball at Aurora University for the Spartans in Illinois, talked postgame about her experience playing in the first of two senior nights with “Really amazing, really honorable, it’s something that you want to live for.”
To cap off the night, the boys team also went up against Hoover in a very back and forth contest that went down to the final buzzer, the hometown Bulldogs walked away with a 67-61 win on a night that senior captain Sattwik Banerjee reached the 1,000 point mark.
The Bulldogs had eight seniors honored in Banerjee, captain Liam Baker, Alex Aroyan, Dante Shahbazian, Ashot Danielian, Josh Navarro, Steven Hartyunian and Nathan Figueroa.
Here’s what some of the seniors had to say about the night: Baker stated, “’I’m excited that our parents came out for this and even though it was a rough year, we had some fun tonight”. Shahbazian further expressed his thoughts with “I'm pumped to play basketball and excited that this was my last home game with my brothers.” As for interim Bulldogs coach Michael Lance reflected with “Over four years, the boys put in a lot of hard work and dedication to the program and developing their skills so this night is about them,” and also talked about the tremendous accomplishment of senior Banerjee “It was a tremendous feeling that he's worked hard for all year and another example of his accomplishments with the program.”
Banerjee led the offensive scoresheet for the Bulldogs with 19 points, as for the Tornadoes they were led by the junior scoring duo of Mo Shareef and Zach Van Patten - who scored 23 and 19 points respectively. Jenghiz Van Patten also had five points for Hoover. Tornadoes coach Jack Van Patten had this to say on his team's performance against Burbank, “They shot the ball better at the free throw line than we did.”
The Burbank girls’ will host the Glendale Nitros today, January 31st with tip-off slated for 5. As for the Burbank boys’, they will travel to Glendale today as well for a 5 pm tip-off. Hoover girls’ (0-18 overall) are slated to travel to 3-16 Pasadena Bulldogs today at 5. But the Lady Bulldogs of Pasadena have forfeited their last four Pacific League contests against Crescenta Valley, Glendale, Burbank and Burroughs so VST can’t confirm if this contest will actually take place. The Hoover boys’, who are winless through 12 league matches, will be home against Pacific League leader Pasadena today, January 31 with tip-off slated for 5.
