Valley Academy of Arts Sciences girls’ basketball defeats Robert F. Kennedy Community in the CIF LA Section Division IV Championship

Angelina Beshara (#33 white) scores 16-points in the VAAS victory over Robert F. Kennedy Community

The Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences (VAAS) girls’ basketball team defeated Robert F. Kennedy Community 32-29 in the CIF City Section Division IV Championship on Thursday, February 23, 2023.

The Vipers made an extraordinary comeback after being down in the first and second quarters. Most of the match was dominated by the Bobcats. The momentum was with the Bobcats as they drew fouls and scored on fast breaks. The defensive pressure by Robert F. Kennedy Community caused the VAAS side to turn the ball over multiple times.

Heading into the half, there was little hope for the Vipers as the Bobcats finished the second quarter with a comfortable lead of 22-10. Coach Tess Williams believes that their Viper defense allowed them to make the comeback in the third and fourth quarters because "we played better defense and started rebounding the ball." Coach Williams described the Vipers as a fourth quarter team and reminded the Vipers that "this could be their last game and to leave everything on the floor."

In the fourth quarter, sophomore center #33, Angelina Beshara, went on a scoring streak and could not be contained defensively. The Bobcats rotated defenders on Beshara, but they had no response for her, as she scored multiple times in the paint. Beshara finished the game with 16 points, aiding the Vipers in their comeback victory. "This is a mental game, and I was locked in.” She reflected, “Never give up!" The Bobcats would end up scoring only 7 points in the final two quarters, while the Vipers would go on a 22-point run.

Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences finishes the season with a record of 15-7, and the Robert F. Kennedy side finishes as runners-up with a record of 21-11. The Vipers now move on to the state playoffs. The date and time have yet to be set, as brackets for that tournament are expected to be released on Sunday February 26.
