Burroughs Edges League Rival Glendale on Walk-Off Wild Pitch

Heading into Friday Night’s Pacific League Showdown in the Bear House of John Burroughs High School, The Burroughs Bears were fresh off an 11-0 win over the Glendale Nitros on Tuesday, April 4th, 2023 at Glendale High School. They were seeking a 2-game sweep of the Nitros on Friday Night. The Bears would get the sweep, but it would not be another blowout. They would escape with a 5-4 walk-off win.

During the bottom of the 7th inning, there was a controversial double play call when Christian Perez of Burroughs was called safe at 2nd and the call at 1st base was 50/50 as there was only 1 baserunner on at first which happened to be Kenny Montgormery of Burroughs. After the controversial call, the next batter, Logan Drossin, showed bunt, but the pitch was wild and speedster Jarrel Bijasa raced in from third base and scored the game winning run to walk it off for the Bears. Bijasa finished the game 1 for 3, with the winning run scored in the bottom of the 7th inning. “Initially, our plan was to advance on the safety squeeze,” Bijasa said of the final run, “and when the pitcher of Glendale was going through the windup and was aggressive on my end, … I saw the ball get away, it was my opportunity to come in and score.”

Glendale Head Coach Frank Tormina shared his thoughts on the controversial call in the bottom of the 7th which ultimately set up the Nitros in a situation to lose the game, “Basically, the guy was safe at second base, with the umpires focus was on 2nd but didn’t look at first base and see the play there and what infuriated me was that he didn’t ask for help, and knew he was wrong.” Taormina said. He went on to say that he expects his team will make the CIF Playoffs at season’s end but was proud of the effort in Glendale’s 5-4 loss to Burroughs.

Burroughs starting pitcher Sebastian Zamora didn’t look his typical self on the mound, but he still put up a decent performance as he went 3.2 innings, allowing 8 hits, 5 runs, 3 of which were unearned, 6 strikeouts, and 0 walks. Lucas Beltran followed Zamora and went 3 strong innings allowing 3 hits, 1 unearned run, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. He was relieved in the 7th inning after loading the bases and allowing Glendale to score their unearned run to tie the game. Zach Freck came on in relief and recorded the final out in the inning..

The Burroughs Bears improve their record to 10-6 Overall, 7-1 in Pacific League Play while the Glendale Nitros fall to 6-13 Overall, 2- 6 in Pacific League play. Burroughs will look to extend their win streak to 3 games as they will take on Arcadia in the first of 2 games on Tuesday at Arcadia High School at 3:30 PM, while Glendale will play Muir in the first of a back to back also on Tuesday at 3:30 PM At Muir High School.
