Providence Baseball completes the 2 game sweep fo Chadwick
The Providence Pioneers extended their win streak to 3 games on Saturday afternoon in their 4-2 win over the Chadwick Dolphins. Starting pitcher Sutton Frost pitched a complete game as he went 7 innings, giving up 3 hits, 2 unearned runs, and recorded 9 strikeouts versus no walks allowed. Adrian Contreas had a 3 for 3 day with a run batted in and scored the go ahead run in the 5th inning. Prior to Saturday’s game against Chadwick, The Pioneers defeated the Dolphins 3-1 on Thursday afternoon behind a stellar outing by Conor Cafferty.
On Saturday, Chadwick started the scoring in the 2nd inning as Nathaniel Castro led off the inning with a single before stealing second base. He came around to score the game’s first run on a passed ball. Providence responded to tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning as Garrett Barnes hit a 2-out double which led to Matt Dorfman scoring the tying run. Barnes also had a great day at the plate, as he drove in 2 runs and went 2 for 3.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, Frost found himself in a bit of trouble as 2 runners reached base via error and a hit batsman, but he was able to record the final out via the strikeout to secure the victory. In addition to scoring 4 runs in the win, the Pioneers recorded 7 hits and committed 3 errors. They also not only held Chadwick to the 2 unearned runs, but limited the Dolphins to just 3 hits. Providence Coach Mando Contreas shared his thoughts on the teams win over Chadwick, “We made great adjustments in the middle of the game where we had to improve on offensively, and we got guys on base late with 2 outs, but Garret Barnes had a great day at the plate with 2 RBI’s which both came with 2 outs.” He also praised Sutton Frost on his fantastic performance even though he threw 100 pitches and stated his son Adrian Contreas is a catalyst on the base pads and at the plate.
The Pioneers improve to 8-7 Overall and 4-2 in Prep League play and remain in 2nd place in the league behind Flintridge Prep. Providence will play at Flintridge Prep on Tuesday at 3:30PM. This will be a first of a back to back for the Pioneers, as they face Polytechnic of Pasadena on Wednesday. Providence and Flintridge Prep will also meet in the final two games of the season.
