Samantha Buckley, Tatiana Pisa, Maddison Kellogg shine in the Bulldogs Win Over Sierra Canyon
After losing 3 straight games, The Burbank Bulldogs extended their win streak to 2 games with their 1-0 victory over the visiting Sierra Canyon Trailblazers on Monday afternoon. The Bulldogs carried the momentum from a hard fought 1-0 loss to Burroughs 1-0 in 8 innings on Friday Night into a 4-2 win over Kennedy on Saturday. Monday was another pitcher’s duel for the Bulldogs as Maddison Kellogg recorded 11 strikeouts in a complete game shutout in the win. Her counterpart Madeline Debbs struck out 12 batters in the loss for the Trailblazers.
In the top of the first leadoff hitter Hailey Shuler started the game with a leadoff walk, but Sierra Canyon was unable to capitalize with the early baserunner. Natalia Arieliz popped out to first baseman Sasha Quintanair and then Isabella Mertes lined out to shortstop Samantha Buckley and Schuler was tagged out at 2B which resulted in an inning-ending double play. The Bulldogs got the scoring going in the bottom half of the inning when Samantha Buckley hit a leadoff triple and then scored the game’s only run on an RBI bunt single by Tatiana Pisa.
The defensive play of the day happened in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Trailblazers center fielder Peyton Jackson robbed Belinda Lujano of extra bases with an incredible running catch. Kellogg worked her way out of trouble when she stranded the runners on 3rd and 2nd base after allowing the one out triple to Natalia Arieliz and walking Isabella Mertes, who then stole second. The Bulldogs had their chances to add more runs in the 4th inning but Shelby Cribbs hit into a fielder's choice to leave the bases loaded.
Burbank ace Maddison Kellogg shared her thoughts on her performance “I thought I did really good, it was easy for me to get back at it after pitching on Friday and Saturday.” Coach Melissa Sanchez said that Samantha Buckley is in the leadoff spot for a reason, as she has the highest on-base percentage on the team. She also commended Kellogg on another outstanding performance on the hill.
With the win Burbank improves their record to 15-9 while Sierra Canyon drops to 8-4-1. Next up for the Bulldogs, they will take on Crescenta Valley at home on Thursday, April 20 with the first pitch at 3:30PM. Sierra Canyon will visit Alemany High School Tuesday at 3PM.
