Burroughs win 6-5 in extra innings against El Dorado in the Quarterfinal Round of the CIF Division 4 Playoffs
Alyssa Morales hit a walk-off single to drive in Phoebe Spangler to give the Burroughs Bears a 6-5 win in 9 innings over the El Dorado Hawks in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs. With the victory, the Bears return to the semifinals for a 2nd straight season.
Burroughs needed extra innings to secure the win after star pitcher Stevie Dabbadie hit a rough patch in the top of the 6th inning with 4 runs allowed followed by another run in the 7th inning to tie the game. Staked to a 5-run lead, Dabbadie allowed 5 of the 8 total hits and 2 of the 3 walks she surrendered during that span. She got the first out of the sixth inning before allowing a single and two walks to load the bases. The Hawks followed that up with a sacrifice fly, a two-RBI triple by Carly Parmenter, and an RBI double from Jess Cherms. Burroughs was able to record the final out when Jaden Cody lined out to Lilly Lewis at 2nd base.
El Dorado tied the game in the 7th when they struck with one out. The Hawks singled twice off Dabbadie, and then JoJo Johnson drove home Peyton Clark for the tying run on an RBI fielder’s choice. Ultimately, Dabbadie did finish with 7 strikeouts in her 9 innings pitched.
Burroughs got the scoring going in the bottom of the first inning as Gizelle Rangsiyawong drove in Rachel Little for an RBI Single. The Bears loaded the bases in the bottom of the 3rd inning and Spangler then hit a 3-run RBI double which scored Rangsiyawong, Skylar Vanole, and Chloe Centeno to make it a 4-0 game. Freshman Karlee Earl later drove in Spangler with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-0. Spangler started the bottom of the 9th inning with a lead-off single and Alyssa Rosales followed that up with a single of her own to put Spangler in scoring position with no outs. Lewis and Earl struck out to bring up Morales with a chance to win the game.
Morales was able to remain calm and confident coming up to the plate with runners in scoring position and two outs, “When I went up to the plate I took a deep breath hoping for the best, and when I hit that it was going to be my hit.” She went on to say that she was proud of the group of girls that made it this far and is very excited to play in the semi-finals. Burroughs Assistant Coach Sheila Oasay called Morales a "diamond in the rough," Head Coach Doug Nicol also shared his thoughts on Morales’ walk-off RBI Single. “I know what Alyssa has put into this. She has a great heart and a lot of confidence that she would get redemption because two innings before she was in that same situation and hit the ball really well but (it) went to the right fielder and I knew how badly she really wanted it.” He went on to say that he was never nervous when El Dorado came back 5 runs down to tie the game but described it as a teaching moment for those kids to be better in big moments, especially in playoff games.
The Burroughs Bears will take on Fullerton in the CIF Division 4 Semifinals on Saturday, May 13th at 3:15 PM in Fullerton as they attempt to move on to the CIF Division 4 Championship game next Saturday, May 19th in Irvine.
