Chavez Eagles defeat Smidt Tech 11 – 1 in the CIF LA City Section Division Three Semi-Finals

Chavez Eagles Head Coach Victor Sotelo

Tuesday May 24, 2023 was just another day at the office for Chavez baseball. The Eagles have been enjoying their run in the playoffs and Tuesday afternoon was no different. The visiting Smidt Tech Grey Wolves had no response for the Chavez Eagles. The Eagles dominated at home in their 11 - 1 victory over the Grey Wolves. The Chavez victory seals their trip to the CIF LA City Section DIII Championship on Friday.

The game was controlled from the 1st inning as the Eagles established themselves and made it difficult for the Grey Wolves to get anything going. After holding Smidt Tech off the board, the Eagles got eight runs in the bottom of the first inning with no response from the Grey Wolves until the 4th inning. Chavez scored three more runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning, triggering the mercy rule that ended the game out of sportsmanship for the Grey Wolves. The Grey Wolves battled with courage but their bravery was no match for the experience and composure of the Eagles.

Chavez head coach Coach Victor Sotelo had these remarks after the game, “It’s always a grind, and no matter the score you have to play like you are behind”. The mindset and attitude of the Eagles may be the reason they haven’t faced a stiff challenge from an opponent in the playoffs. The pressure and aggressiveness of the Eagles have made it difficult for their opponents. Coach Sotelo emphasized the importance of everyone performing their roles and not worrying about the opponent to encourage his side to remain focused and not become overconfident. The pitching of Chavez has been significant in their postseason. Pitchers Ivan Martinez (freshman) and Brandon Zazueta (sophomore) have contributed to the success of the Eagles, and they will play a key role in the Championship game on Friday.
