Burbank Bulldogs Softball 2023 Season in Review

The Burbank Bulldogs softball team had a decent 2023 season as they put together a winning season with a 14-12 overall record and a league record of 4-5. The team had a promising start to the regular season with big wins against Canyon, South Pasadena, Eagle Rock, and Vasquez but ended the regular season with a 2 game losing streak with losses to Arcadia and Burroughs. The Bulldogs were knocked out of the first round of the CIF Playoffs for the second year in a row with a 6-3 loss to Fillmore, but this team will look to get over the hump next season.

Burbank was well represented in postseason awards with five players who received Pacific League honors. Senior shortstop Samantha Buckley and sophomore pitcher Maddison Kellogg were selected to the first-team All-Pacific League, while senior outfielder Delilah Alvarado and junior third baseman Eliza Bowren made the second-team All-Pacific League. Junior outfielder Kara Valencia received the Pacific League's Honorable Mention.

Burbank Head Coach Melissa Sanchez shared her thoughts on the 2023 season and the team’s first-round loss to Fillmore, “As a whole, I believe that we played very competitively against every team! Our record doesn’t indicate how strong our team was this year. This season was a very humbling experience for the players and the coaches. It didn’t end the way we wanted but I couldn’t be more proud of these girls.”

When asked about losing 7 seniors, she admitted that it will be hard to say goodbye to Samantha Buckley, Shelby Cribbs, Delilah Alvarado, Sasha Quintanar, Emma Mendoza, and Tatiana Pisa, as they were the glue that kept the entire team strong and will miss them tremendously. The upcoming senior class is being looked on to take on the reigns of leadership. Sanchez stated that Belinda Lujano, Kara Valencia, Leilah Hernandez, and Eliza Bowren are expected to play a huge role in next season’s squad. Hernandez will likely take over as the team’s starting catcher. Other players to watch next season will be pitcher/infielders Kayla Orozco and Samantha Cafferty along with infielder/outfielder Charley Barnett. They have the potential to play an important role in next year’s varsity team.

The team held tryouts on June 1st and will have fall conditioning before gearing up for the 2024 season.
