Burroughs High Football 2023 Season Preview
The Burroughs Bears are entering the 2023 season following a 2nd place finish behind the defending champion Pasadena Bulldogs in the Pacific League with a record of 7-4 overall and a league record of 3-2 last season. This season, the Bears have high expectations and look to go further in the CIF Playoffs. Though they graduated numerous seniors from last season’s run, there are some key contributors returning this fall. Among them is senior quarterback Chris Kulikov, a returning All-Pacific League first-team player and a CIF player a season ago. He will be joined by quite a few senior playmakers, notably three receiver/defensive backs who were honored by the Pacific League. Ethan Hubbell, who won the Pacific League’s Honorable Mention, All-Pacific League 1st team recipient Ryan Hernandez, and 2nd team All-Pacific League honoree Jake Scozzola. Brody Beebe, who plays both the offensive line and defensive end, is another returning senior from the team who will be expecting big things from...
Head Coach Jesse Craven shared his thoughts on if this team is ready to go over the hump this season after a 2nd place finish in the Pacific League and a first-round exit in the CIF Playoffs to Tahquitz High School in Hemet, California, “We are starting completely fresh. What we did last season will have no effect on what this team does. We lost a lot of seniors who were big contributors and a lot of our juniors and sophomores have grown and developed as this is a completely different situation which I have no idea of what will happen this season.”
Craven has added to the staff this year, with Joe Maile, Steve Klayman, and Ron Jones coming on board. Maile, the new offensive coordinator, has had prior experience as a Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Canyon High School along with previous stops at Glendale High School and Harvard Westlake in the same role prior to joining Burroughs. Klayman will be the team’s quarterback’s coach as he is a private football coach in the Los Angeles area. Jones spent last season as a defensive coordinator at Pasadena High School, a role he will be reprising with the Bears as well as being the team’s assistant head coach. Kieth Rechicca is entering his 17th season as the Bear’s special teams coordinator, currently the longest-tenured assistant on staff. In addition to his special team's duties, Rechicca will also serve as the Bear's linebackers coach.
Burroughs will open their season at home on Friday, August 18th against Harvard Westlake at 7 PM at Memorial Field. The other games currently worth highlighting on their schedule are Senior Night on October 20, when the Crescenta Valley Falcons come to Memorial Field. The senior night festivities will celebrate the graduating members of the football and cheer teams. Burroughs and rival Burbank High will hold joint Homecoming celebrations on October 27 when the Bears are the designated visitors against the Bulldogs. Stay tuned for more coverage of the 2023 season.
