Burbank Bulldogs Football 2023 Season Preview
The Burbank Bulldogs are entering the 2023 season in need of a rebound after going 4-6 , and 2-3 in the Pacific League. They are looking to have a bounce-back season after a losing season a year ago. The Bulldogs will be a younger team, featuring numerous underclassmen, but it could also lead to an exciting season. “I’m really excited,” said Burbank head coach Adam Colman, “we have a young team with a lot of potential. This team has been working hard to gear up for the season, it will be fun to watch them grow.”
There are a few players to keep an eye on this season. The Bulldogs have two returning seniors in running back/linebacker Jacob Mendieta and tight end/offensive and defensive lineman Levon Bakmazian. Mendieta received All-Pacific League 2nd team honors in 2022. Leading the offense will be junior quarterback Daniel Zacariaz. Zacariaz had a brief stint running the varsity offense last year. Two other juniors expected to be big contributors this season are wide receiver/defensive back Ezekiel Alvarez and offensive Line/defensive lineman Sebastian Mirzakhaian, who was the Pacific League’s Honorable Mention in 2022. They are looking to contribute to the team’s turnaround season.
Colman, entering his 6th season as the head coach of the Burbank High School Football Program, spoke highly of Zacariaz as he prepares to take hold as the starting quarterback on the varsity squad. He also praised Mirzakhian’s growth following his Pacific League honorable mention in his sophomore year. Colman also lauded the work put in by Mendieta who’s had a ton of experience on the varsity level.
One of the newest members of the coaching staff is defensive backs coach Mark Haley, who will be sharing the duties with Randy Spens. Haley spent 32 years at Rainier Beach High School in Washington which included 22 years as head coach. He also spent 6 years mentoring four new head coaches as he worked with Derek Sparks at Garfield High School, along with 4 years at Foster High School with Elijah Ruhl for 2 years then 1 year with Gio Perez along with 1 more year with Kendall Lewis.
The Bulldogs will kick off the 2023 season with road games against Dos Pueblos on Friday, August 18th, and Santa Fe next Friday, August 25th, before returning home for their 115th Anniversary Game against Castaic at Burbank High School on Friday, September 1st. The remaining home games will take place at Memorial Field at John Burroughs High School. Other games to highlight on their schedule are Senior night on Thursday, October 19th against Pasadena as both football and cheer teams will be celebrated, along with their joint homecoming game with Burroughs on October 27th against the Bears which will take place at Memorial Field as the Bulldogs will be the home team.
