Burbank falls to Immaculate Heart 3 sets to 1 in the 2023 season opener

The new school year started on Monday, August 14th, and the Burbank Bulldogs had hopes of starting off the 2023 season on a good note after a losing year a season ago. Unfortunately, they came in with first-game jitters and fell to Immaculate Heart in 4 sets 13-25, 7-25, 25-14, 14-25. The Pandas, on the other hand, had a losing season a year ago but were coming off a 5-set loss to Pacifica Christian High School in Orange County on Monday Night to kick off the new season.

After Immaculate Heart took the first 2 sets, Burbank responded with a 25-14 win in the 3rd set to avoid the sweep by the Pandas. Senior outside hitter Addison Ritter and junior outside hitter Alison Foenander helped the Bulldogs avoid the sweep to force a 4th set. The Bulldogs came into the 4th set with momentum to force a 5th set but ended up falling short in the 4th set by the final of 14-25. Immaculate Heart’s Head Coach Leilani Napoleon shared her thoughts on the team’s first win of the season against Burbank, after falling to Pacifica Christian High School on Monday night, “Our serving was a lot better today and made in-game adjustments that we didn’t do in the game against Pacifica on Monday night.” When asked about sophomore middle blocker Jade Jackson, she said that Jackson had a decent performance in the win against Burbank but does expect more out of her.

Burbank assistant coach Choy Jimenez was not unhappy with the team’s performance in the season-opening loss, “Nothing went wrong in the loss,” he said, “we just have things to work on, especially with receiving our serves. We’re a defense-first team, with small hitters but still weak offensively. If we work on defending better it will make our offense better as well as communication with everyone.” He went on to say that everyone had a good game despite the loss.

The Immaculate Heart Pandas improve their record to 1-1, while the Burbank Bulldogs fall to 0-1. Next up for Immaculate Heart, they will take on Royal High School, in Simi Valley on Thursday, August 17th at 6:30 PM, while Burbank will play their 2nd home game of the 2023 season against Louisville on the same day at 3:30 PM.
