Burroughs defeats Granada Hills 3 sets to 1 in home opener

The John Burroughs Bears are off to a 3-1 start to the 2023 season following a 2-game split against El Segundo and Martin Luther King High School in the Molten Classic, plus a 4-set win over Chatsworth on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears kept their early momentum going when they beat the defending West Valley League champion Granada Hills Highlanders in 4 sets in their season home opener 25-15, 25-19, 16-25, 25-15. Burroughs was led by Sadie Lomet’s masterful performance as she had a total of 19 kills in the game.

The Highlanders, unfortunately, appeared to come into the contest with first-game jitters as they dropped the first 2 sets. They responded nicely with a strong 3rd set win over the Bears 25-16 to force a 4th set. Burroughs bounced back and ended the match right there with a decisive 25-15 win.

This game was also Cheyenne Bledsoe’s debut as the new head coach of the girls’ volleyball program at Granada Hills. Bledsoe is taking over for the legendary Tom Harp, who stepped away to focus on coaching the boy’s program. , “It’s big shoes to fill,” Bledsoe said of taking over as head coach, “coach Harp has been there for a long time, he has done an amazing job with the girls, I’m definitely feeling the pressure but I’m definitely up to the challenge.” Harp led the Highlanders to a CIF Division 1 Semifinal appearance in his last season with the girl’s team, but lost to Eastlake 3 sets to 1.

Burroughs’s head coach Edwin Real shared his thoughts on the team’s home-opening win over Granada Hills, “Our serving was really good, and we kept them out of their offense. But once we get our passing going we’re a competitive team.” When asked about the performances of Tawnie Ohrt and Sadie Lamet, he said that they played great games, and are both team captains for a reason. Other notable top performers in the win for Burroughs against Granada Hills were sophomore outside hitter Sienna Lay who had 4 kills, and Ohrt who had 3 kills in the season home opening win over the Highlanders.

Granada Hills will take on San Marcos High School from Santa Barbara in a tournament game on Saturday, August 19th at 8:30 AM. Following the tournament, the Highlanders will visit Crescenta Valley on Thursday, August 24, and Hart (Newhall) on August 31 before their first home game and West Valley League opening contest against the Taft Toreadors on Monday, September 11. Next up for Burroughs is a return to the Molton Classic Tournament to take on Cypress on the same day at 12 p.m. The next home game for the Burroughs Bears will be on Tuesday, August 22nd against Monrovia at 3:45 PM.
