Burroughs sweeps Monrovia

After losing to Cypress in a sweep, and to Valley Christian in 4 sets in the Molten Classic, The Burroughs Bears bounced back with a sweeping victory over the Monrovia Wildcats. Tawine Ohrt led the way with 11 kills in the win over the Wildcats. Ohrt has performed well through the first two games at the tournament for Burroughs. The Monrovia Wildcats were fresh off a 4-set loss to Walnut on Monday afternoon as senior opposite hitter Kaitlyn Molinar had a 9-kill performance in the loss.

It was an up-and-down first set for the Bears, as they built a big lead before the Wildcats battle back. Burroughs managed to settle with a 25-23 win in set 1 before easily winning sets 2 and 3 to complete the sweep of the Wildcats. Aside from Ohrt, senior middle blocker Sadie Lomet had a 7-kill performance along with sophomore middle blocker Khloe Pavia, who ended up with 5 kills in the win for the Bears against Monrovia. Despite the loss for the Wildcats, junior libero Isabella De La Pena performed well for Monrovia, leading the team with 16 digs, and sophomore’s Grace Quiroz had 6 kills, and Devon Torres had 4 kills respectively. “Our preseason schedule is difficult, losing to Molten is not terrible, we learned from it and used it in today’s game to make us better,” said Burroughs head coach Edwin Real on his team’s bounce-back win. Real also spoke highly of one of the Lay twins, Sienna had good serves in the game after struggling over the weekend at the Molton Classic, as she was on point in the win over Monrovia. Real also said that the team was overconfident in the 1st set and did not play as a unit. He reminded the players it was a team game.

The John Burroughs Bears improved their record to 4-3 with the win, and the Monrovia Wildcats dropped to 2-6 with the loss. Burroughs will have a big matchup against Taft High School(Woodland Hills) on Thursday, August 24th, at home which will be a 3:45 PM start.
