The Grant Lancers were defeated by the San Fernando Tigers 45-20 in their non-conference season opener on Friday August 25, 2023.

The first half was dominated by the Tigers who ended the half 24-7. Despite being behind, the Lancers would find a little spark in the 3rd and 4th quarter. The Lancers made an effort to fight back, scoring twice in the second half. The senior heavy offensive experience of the Tigers would not let the Lancers scores go unanswered as they scored three touchdowns in the 3rd and 4th quarter themselves. The momentum of the Lancers was not enough for them to overcome the experience of the Tigers.

Senior quarterback Adrian Anguiano led the San Fernando Tigers, finishing the game with 125 quarterback rating. Anguiano had a strong performance completing 23 out of 27 passing attempts for a total of 349 yards. Senior Andrew Munos was his primary target, hauling in six receptions for 137 yards. Another senior, Edward Lopez, balanced the San Fernando attack, rushing 17 times for 103 yards. San Fernando finished the game with 548 yards.

Lancers Junior quarterback Armen Hovsepian finished the night completing 12 out of 20 passing attempts for a total of 123 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception for a passing rating of 90. Though Grant, leaning heavily on underclassmen this season, wasn’t able to surpass 200 yards of offense, topping out at 166 yards, there were some encouraging performances. Junior Israel Castaneda ran for 42 yards and one touchdown on only seven carries. Sophomores Samuel Villagrana and Sean Palomino recorded 33 receiving yards each, with Palomino catching one of Hovsepian’s touchdown passes.

Coach Franco Stasilli of Grant was pleased with the performance of his side. Stasilli pointed out the young core of players on Grant’s roster. “We saw some guys make plays but we are thankful for the experience.” “Some of our guys made mistakes but those are minor things we can work on.” Stasilli asks his team to learn from their mistakes, but he is confident his boys will be ready for their next game. Grant high school now 0 - 1 will travel to Cleveland high school 1-0 on Friday August 25, 2023 at 7:00 PM. San Fernando will host Cesar Chavez 1-0 on Friday August 25, 2023 at 7:30 PM. The Lancers look to bounce back on Friday and the Tigers hope to build something special.
