Heritage Christian shuts out Hueneme in a dominating 36-0 victory
Riding high from an impressive 36-19 win against El Camino Real, the Heritage Christian Warriors hosted the Hueneme Vikings looking to avoid a let down on their home field. The Vikings made the long journey from the Oxnard area on Saturday September 2nd, 2023 looking to get their first win of the season. After a slow start, the Warriors were able to get going in the 2nd quarter powered by their offense. Senior DJ Cole finished the outing with 15 carries, 122 yards, and three total touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving). Sophomore quarterback Khanai Langford added three passing touchdowns of his own on an efficient 24/31 outing, 246 yards passing and a 77.4 completion percentage. The Warriors defense and special teams forced two turnovers combined, while shutting out the Vikings offense to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The tone of the game started as a defensive struggle in the first quarter, ending in a scoreless stalemate. Early in the second quarter, the momentum shifted in favor of Heritage Christian when Hueneme committed a pass interference penalty to set up the Warriors in Vikings territory. Three plays later on 3rd & 8, Langford threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Rossie Cherry, putting the Warriors up 6-0 after a failed two-point conversion attempt. After the Warriors defense forced a 3-and-out, the Vikings suffered a muffed punt attempt, which was recovered by the Warriors in goal line territory. Cole added the first of his two rushing touchdowns on the night, followed by a successful two-point conversion attempt to put Heritage Christian ahead 14-0.
The Warriors defense put pressure on junior Vikings quarterback Lance Olivares on the subsequent drive, adding their first sack of the game in another 3-and-out possession. After receiving great field position on the Vikings 45 yard line, Cole ripped off an acrobatic 45-yard touchdown run on the first play of the drive, making defenders miss in the process. His second touchdown of the day along with the extra point helped propel Heritage Christian to a 21-0 halftime lead.
Heritage Christian kept their foot on the gas at the start of the second half as their defense continued to shut down the Hueneme offense. The Warriors essentially put the game away in their first possession of the half as Cole added a receiving touchdown to his five total on the season, putting them up 28-0. The Vikings offense was unable to produce a first down until midway through the third quarter. Langford provided an exclamation point later on in the quarter with his third touchdown pass of the night to junior wide receiver Keeshawn Mills to give the Warriors a 36-0 lead with the successful two-point conversion attempt. The Warriors defense preserved the shutout in the fourth quarter, as their backup players were able to receive playing time in the 36-0 win.
After the big win last week, Heritage Christian Head Coach Brent Huff stressed to his team during the week to maintain their competitive edge to avoid a let down. He states, “We can’t get comfortable. We can’t get satisfied. We can’t become complacent, because this week’s performance is not good enough for next week’s.”
Huff and his staff conduct a team exercise each week called the “Word of the Week”, and the word for this past week was “commitment”. He uses this exercise to keep the players on the same page in their preparation for each game, “Having that ‘Word of the Week’ every week helps us keep a laser focus to the task at hand. Trying to keep them understanding the importance of staying in the moment.” The Warriors will look for their third consecutive win as they host a non-league contest against Sierra Vista on Friday.
