The Power List: Second Edition
Week Three of the VST power rankings sees the top teams in the City and Southern Sections hold firm after victories last week. The Valley Mission is well represented this week on the city side, while two Ironwood rivals look to chase down the top teams in the southern section. Here is the Power List heading into week three of the regular season:
City Section Rankings
1. Birmingham Patriots (2-1)
The Patriots got back to business and erased the taste of that underwhelming performance at Notre Dame by beating up Oak Park at home last Friday night. They’ll look to even out their record against winless Hueneme before taking a trip to Texas next week.
2. Cleveland Cavaliers (3-0)
The Cavaliers just keep rolling and remain unbeaten at the start of the season. The Cavs are putting up nearly 47 points per game this season. They will look to move to 4-0 on the road at Hamilton this week.
3. Granada Hills Highlanders (1-1-1)
The Highlanders looked more like the program we have grown accustomed to seeing when they took down Palisades on the road last week. It is all about “The Tina” this week, as they face fellow Granada Hills rival Kennedy on the road this week.
4. Panorama Pythons (3-0)
The Pythons have been steady to begin the season, posting three comfortable victories in their first three games. The Pythons should move to 4-0 before beginning league play versus Sylmar next week.
5. Kennedy Cougars (2-1)
The Cougars have bounced back with two impressive road victories after dropping their opener at home against Cleveland. They will have their work cut out for them against their rival Granda Hills.
6. San Fernando Tigers (3-0)
The Tigers have been impressive to begin the year and they will face their toughest test to date when they travel to face unbeaten Verdugo Hills Friday night.
7. Sylmar Spartans (2-1)
The Spartans are one of the more fun teams to watch in the Valley. They will get a big boost by adding Will Clark back to the lineup when they face Santa Monica at home this week.
8. Arleta Mustangs (2-1)
The Mustangs faced their first bit of adversity this season when they stumbled against Marquez at home last week. They will look to right the ship versus Trinity Classical on Friday afternoon.
9. El Camino Real Royals (1-2)
The Royals found their win into the win column after a tough road win at North Hollywood last week. They’ll move up the rankings if they are able to take down Franklin on the road this week.
10. Taft Toreadors (1-2)
The Toreadors are a much better team than their record would suggest through the first three weeks. Grant could be in trouble dealing with a Taft bunch that will want to get back on track before a tough test at Heritage Christian next week.
Honorable Mentions This Week: Verdugo Hills Dons (3-0), Chatsworth Chancellors (2-1), North Hollywood Huskies (1-2), Chavez Eagles (1-2), Van Nuys Wolves (1-2)
Southern Section Rankings
1. Sierra Canyon Trailblazers (3-0)
The Trailblazers have been firing on all cylinders defensively to begin the year. They will take that 7 points per game defensive unit on the road to Orange to face Lutheran this week.
2. Notre Dame(SO) Knights (3-0)
The Knights have impressed to start the season, but they will face their toughest opponent yet when they head to JSerra Catholic on Friday night.
3. Burroughs Bears (3-0)
The Bears have managed to take victories in each of their first three games. La Canada should provide a good test for Burroughs this week.
4. Village Christian Crusaders (2-1)
Chase Everett and the Crusaders took their first loss of the season on the road at Salesian last week. They’ll face Campbell Hall at home this week.
5. Heritage Christian Warriors (2-1)
The Warriors have it rolling with wins in their last two games at home. They’ll look to make it three in a row when they face Sierra Vista this week.
6. Crescenta Valley Falcons (1-1)
The Falcons lost a tough one in their home opener versus West Covina. They will have their work cut out for them against 3-0 San Marino on the road.
7. Chaminade Eagles (1-2)
The Eagles haven’t had the ideal start to the season, but there is time to turn it around. They have a winnable matchup against Cathedral at home on Friday night.
8. Calabasas Coyotes (1-2)
The Coyotes have been up and down to start the season, but this remains a talented bunch capable of beating anybody they face. They take on Agoura on the road this week.
9. Harvard-Westlake Wolverines (1-2)
The Wolverines have had a hard time finding the endzone in the early part of the season. They will look to get right against South this week at home.
10. Campbell Hall Vikings (1-2)
The Vikings hang on to the final spot in the rankings this week. They’ll look to solidify a better spot next week with a win on the road against a tough Village Christian team.
Honorable Mentions This Week: Crespi Celts (1-2), Viewpoint Patriots (1-2), Alemany Warriors (0-3), St Genevieve Valiants (0-2), Burbank Bulldogs (0-3)
