The Power List: 4th edition

The latest edition of the VST Power List sees familiar faces at the top of the City and Southern Section Valley rankings. Granada Hills closes the gap on Birmingham with a good win at home, Cleveland and Notre Dame bounced back from their first losses with impressive victories, while Verdugo Hills and Viewpoint make their first appearances in their respective power rankings in 2023.

City Section Rankings

1. Birmingham Patriots (3-1)

The Patriots are still the top dogs on the power rankings this week after having a bye last week. They will head to Texas this week to challenge the #16 ranked team in the state, the Steele Knights.

2. Granada Hills Highlanders (3-1-1)

The Highlanders are still riding high after taking care of business at home against Dorsey last Friday night. They’ll have their bye this week, and I'm sure they will pay close attention to what happens when Birmingham heads to Texas this week before they open West Valley play against each other on the 29th.

3. Panorama Pythons (5-0)

The Pythons hold steady in the third spot on the list after dismantling Sylmar to open their Valley Mission schedule. They’ll have a good test on the road in Van Nuys this week.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers (4-1)

The Cavs bounced back the way you would expect a team of their quality to do after dropping a game on the road at Hamilton last week. The offense looked good putting up 34 points at home against Westchester.

5. San Fernando Tigers (5-0)

The Tigers continue to put the valley Mission on notice after they trounced Canoga Park on the road. They have a tough test at home versus Kennedy this week.

6. Arleta Mustangs (4-1)

The Mustangs went on the road and opened the East Valley slate with a tough defensive win against Verdugo Hills. They’ll have a bye this week before hosting Poly at home on the 29th.

7. Kennedy Cougars (3-2)

The Cougars put a beating on Reseda last week, but they will take on their first stiff test of the Valley Mission schedule when they go on the road to take on San Fernando. The reigning city champions will want to make a statement that the league title goes through them this year.

8. Chatsworth Chancellors (3-2)

The Chancellors dropped a tough one at home against Fillmore, but there is still plenty to like with the makeup of this team. If Rameau can come back healthy in the next couple of weeks, the chances of Chatsworth pulling a win or two in the West Valley remain high.

9. Verdugo Hills Dons (3-2)

The Dons cracked the list for the first time this season despite dropping a tight game to Arleta last week. Verdugo Hills has been much improved this season and looks like a real threat to still win the league if they can run the table the rest of the way.

10. Taft Toreadors (2-2)

The Toreadors didn’t have much fun last week, getting beat soundly on the road at Heritage Christian with several key players missing from the lineup. The Toreadors get a chance to regroup this week before a huge tilt with Cleveland to open the West Valley portion of their schedule in two weeks.

Honorable Mentions: Sylmar (2-3), North Hollywood (2-2), Chavez (2-2), Van Nuys (2-2), Poly (2-3)

Southern Section Rankings

1. Sierra Canyon Trailblazers (4-0)

Sierra Canyon remains at number one after a strong win at Orange Lutheran last week. They have a fascinating matchup against one of the top-ranked teams in the state of Arizona, the Saguaro Sabercats at home this week.

2. Village Christian Crusaders (4-1)

The Crusaders proved they can beat you with more than just their quarterback's golden arm on the road at Burroughs last week. The Crusaders have the week off before going on the road to face Aquinas in San Bernadino on the 29th.

3. Heritage Christian Warriors (4-1)

The Warriors put up 56 at home last week versus an undermanned Taft squad. They’ll get a break this week before Valley Christian pays them a visit in two weeks.

4. Notre Dame Knights (4-1)

The Knights put together a great performance at Westlake last week to secure the number four spot on the list. They face a tough test on the road against Sierra Canyon in two weeks to open Mission League play.

5. Burroughs Bears (4-1)

The Bears were knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten after falling to Village Christian at home last week. They’ll look to get back on track on the 29th win they take on a winless Pasadena squad at home.

6. Crescenta Valley Falcons (3-1)

The Falcons have momentum going their way after taking care of La Canada last week to improve their record to 3-1. They’ve got a good shot at picking up their fourth win at Hoover this week.

7. Chaminade Eagles (3-2)

The Eagles may have found their mojo after a 42-point performance in their win at home versus Loyola last week. They open Mission League play away at Serra on the 29th.

8. Harvard-Westlake Wolverines (2-2)

The Wolverines get back to work after having the week off to prepare for a tough test against a 4-1 Northview squad at home.

9. Crespi Celts (2-3)

The Celts had an impressive win last week against Venice that saw the team rack up nearly 300 yards on the ground. They’ll rest up before heading to Santa Fe Springs to battle St. Paul to open league play on the 29th.

10. Viewpoint Patriots (2-2)

The Patriots snatched the final spot in the rankings after an impressive 35-point victory on the road at Los Amigos in Fountain Valley last Thursday. They’ll look to improve their record to 3-2 at home with a win versus Carpinteria comes to visit this Friday night.
