Glendale beats Burroughs in a 4-set thriller
The John Burroughs Bears, fresh off a sweeping win over the Burbank Bulldogs, fell to a hungry Glendale Nitros squad in 4 sets(25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 19-25). Sadie Lomet had 11 kills for Burroughs while Alenia Manois of Glendale led the team with 11 kills. Glendale came into the contest on a hot streak, having won seven matches in a row. The last time Burroughs played Glendale was back on Thursday, August 31st at Glendale High School which resulted in a 3-set loss for the Bears against the Nitros.
The game was an instant classic as Burroughs won the first set 25-21. Sadie Lomet had 4 kills in that set along with Tawnie Ohrt also recording a kill and ace respectively in the win for the Bears. Freshman Zoe Davis also got a kill as well. Set two also lived up to the hype as Glendale took that set 25-21 to even the match at a set apiece. Despite dropping the second set, sophomore Khloe Pavia recorded two kills in the loss along with sophomore Sienna Lay stepping up big time for the team. Glendale went on to take the third set by the final of 25-21. Burroughs began the 4th set with a 4-0 scoring run until Glendale got their 4-0 scoring run of their own and carried momentum the rest of the set and an eventual 4-set victory. “We’re usually a steady team, knowing that our consistency was going to play a big part in the game today. It’s always tough playing Burroughs at home but we had a great shot to win today,” said Glendale head Coach Marji Keyfauver, she also praised Eillen Herrera’s performance as she admitted that it’s always good when a freshman comes through but, said that her serves were spot on. She also said that this was her breakout performance. “We made alot of errors, we scored 4 in a row to start the 4th set while Glendale scored 5 in a row after we went on a run,” said Burroughs head coach Edwin Real, He also admitted that their chances of finishing in the top 3 in the Pacific League are more difficult when asked about if it ruins their chances of hosting a playoff game in a few weeks.
Glendale improves to 15-6 overall, 4-3 in Pacific League play as their chances of finishing 4th place in league along with making the CIF Playoffs increased significantly in the win over Burroughs. Burroughs drops to 10-8 overall, 5-4 in Pacific League play. The Glendale Nitros will continue their playoff push when they host Burbank on Thursday, September 28th at 3:45 PM while Burroughs will play Crescenta Valley on the same day at 3:30 PM at CV High School.
