The Power List: 5th edition
Coming out of a week where the slate of games was lighter, a few teams capitalized on the spotlight and made waves in the VST power rankings this week. The defending Division II city champions leaped into the top five after a tough win on the road, while an East Valley upstart makes their way onto the list after an impressive win at home. Sierra Canyon made a statement heading into a big matchup in the Mission league this week, while Crescenta Valley took advantage of the spotlight and moved to its highest position in the rankings this year. Here is the latest edition of the VST Power rankings heading into Week Six of the football season:
City Section Rankings
1. Birmingham Patriots (3-2)
The Patriots had a rough time on their road trip to Steele. Nevertheless, they are still the top dogs in the city until somebody takes them down. Granada Hills gets the first crack at them in the West Valley opener Friday night.
2. Granada Hills Highlanders (3-1-1)
The Highlanders are coming out of their bye on the heels of three straight victories and look poised to make another city championship run. They will look to avenge last season’s 1-point loss at the hands of Birmingham in the league opener at home.
3. Panorama Pythons (6-0)
The Pythons have been as impressive as any team in the City Section in 2023 and will look to be the first Valley team to eclipse seven wins this season when they head to Reseda.
4. Kennedy Cougars (4-2)
The defending Division II city champs took care of another tough test on the road at San Fernando last week. The Cougars have a much-deserved bye this week.
5. Cleveland Cavaliers (4-1)
The Cavaliers are coming off their bye week and are chomping at the bit to open league play against Taft on the road.

8. Chavez Eagles (3-2)
Don’t look now, but the Chavez Eagles are looking like a team that might be ready to deliver on the potential that has surrounded this young group in the East Valley. They have already tripled their win total from last year and have a good shot at moving to 2-0 in the league when they face Monroe this week.
9. Chatsworth Chancellors (3-2)
The Chancellors have been an improved bunch throughout the first half of the season. They open West Valley play at El Camino this week.
10. Poly Parrots (3-3)

The Crusaders are flat-out fun to watch with their young gunslinger at quarterback. They get back to work on the road at Aquinas this week.

The Falcons are flying high after knocking off rivals Hoover this past week. They open their Pacific-Upper slate at home against Muir this Friday night.

The Coyotes have been up and down to start the season but have a chance to build momentum coming off a nice win at Oxnard last week.
