Defending 8-Man champion Fulton Prep cruises to victory in a 60-16 victory over Blair

After putting up 50 points in last week’s win against Amino Robinson, the top-ranked Fulton Prep Jaguars were looking to stay unbeaten on their home field. The defending champions of the LA City Section 8-Man Division hosted the 1-3 Blair Vikings on Thursday, September 28th, 2020, a late addition to the Jaguars’ schedule after East Valley was unable to compete. Fulton Prep displayed their championship prowess, as they overwhelmed the Vikings by jumping out to a 30-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Jaguars contributed passing, receiving, rushing, defensive, and special teams touchdowns from both punt & kickoff returns. The 60-16 victory by Fulton Prep brought their record to 3-1 on the season.

On the first possession of the game, the Jaguars defense forced a Vikings three-and-out. The punt attempt on fourth down was thrown overhead in the back of the end zone for a safety, which ended up becoming a microcosm of the outing for Blair. The subsequent first possession for Fulton Prep was capped off by a touchdown from sophomore Angel Rodriguez set up by a breakout run from junior captain Fredy Colin. The early 8-0 lead was only the beginning of the onslaught, as on Blair’s next possession, the Jaguars defense recovered a strip sack fumble in the end zone by senior defensive end Edgar Rodriguez for a touchdown to put them ahead 14-0.

The Vikings were able to get on the scoreboard on the following possession, when sophomore multi-purpose back Damondre Jenkins took a short reception on fourth down and ran it into the end zone, breaking multiple tackles in the process to cut the deficit to 14-8. Just when Blair had hope of getting back into the contest, junior Kevin Najera returned the subsequent kickoff back for a touchdown to put the Jaguars in front 22-8. After a three-and-out possession from the offense, a short punt and a penalty by the Vikings put Fulton Prep in the red zone. Colin ran the ball into the end zone on the first play of the drive with a 12-yard touchdown to close the first quarter with the Jaguars ahead 30-8.

The Vikings were unable to move the ball against the Jaguars defense, as they were unable to capitalize on a special teams mishap from Fulton Prep early in the second quarter. The error led to Najera returning a Blair punt for a touchdown to extend the lead to 38-8 after a second consecutive three-and-out possession. The score remained the same at the half, as both teams turned the ball over on their following possessions, and the Vikings closed the half with a goal line stand.

The second half featured more domination from Fulton Prep, as junior quarterback and team captain Emmanuel Martinez began the second half using his legs with a touchdown run to put the Jaguars ahead 46-8. The Jaguars defense started the half with an interception from junior defensive back Kevin Le, which led head coach Randy Luna to sub in sophomore backup quarterback Robert Udave. He took advantage of his opportunity to play by using his power to bulldoze his way on a scramble into the end zone for a touchdown to put Fulton Prep up 54-8.

Blair was able to close the quarter with a touchdown from Jenkins to cut the deficit to 54-16. In the fourth quarter, Najera added his third touchdown of the day, with a touchdown reception from Martinez to put an exclamation point on the victory. Fulton Prep Head Coach Randy Luna continues to stress to his team to seek self-improvement on the minute details of the game, “We want to continue to make sure that we’re doing the right things. Staying disciplined and fundamentally sound.” The Jaguars will host Cate on Friday in their last contest before starting league play the following week
