The Power List: 6th Edition
Sierra Canyon and Birmingham strengthened their hold on the top spots of the City and Southern versions of the VST Power List heading into week seven of the season. Granada Hills and Heritage Christian slip a few spots this week, while Panorama and Burroughs climb to their highest positions in the rankings after dominant victories in week six action. Here are the latest power rankings heading into games this week:
City Section rankings
1. Birmingham Patriots (4-2)
If there was any doubt that the Patriots are primed and ready to make another run at an Open Division championship, look at their defensive performance against Granada Hills last week. The West Valley schools will have their hands full challenging Birmingham as usual.
2. Panorama Pythons (7-0)
The Pythons are the new number two after a 32-point thrashing at Reseda last week. They will have the week off before beginning a two-week stretch against San Fernando and Kennedy that will decide the Valley Mission.
3. Cleveland Cavaliers (5-1)
The Cavaliers went on the road in their West Valley and took down rival Taft in a spirited contest. They’ll face their biggest test to date this Friday at home against Granada Hills.
4. Kennedy Cougars (4-2)
The Cougars had the week off and maintained their number four position in the rankings. Expect them to cruise this week at home versus the young and rebuilding Canoga Park Hunters.
5. Granada Hills Highlanders (3-2-1)
The Highlanders didn’t perform the way they wanted to against Birmingham this past week, but there is plenty of time and opportunity for Granada Hills to climb back up the list, starting this Friday on the road at Cleveland.
6. Arleta Mustangs (5-1)
Arleta handled a red-hot Poly squad without much trouble this past week to stay in the sixth spot. They’ll look to move to 6-1 on the road at Grant.
7. San Fernando Tigers (6-1)
The Tigers rebounded from a tough loss in a big way against Van Nuys last week. They’ll need some help from Panorama to have a chance at winning the Valley Mission. They will look to continue to stay in the league race with a win at home against Sylmar.
8. El Camino Real Royals (2-4)
The Royals survived a close one against Chatsworth last week to jump back into the top ten. They’ll look to move to 2-0 in the West Valley on the road at Taft.
9. Sylmar Spartans (4-3)
The Spartans are a long shot to win the Valley Mission, but this is still a dangerous team with more than a few weapons at their disposal on offense. San Fernando should be on high alert.
10. Verdugo Hills Dons (4-3)
The Dons jumped back onto the list after a tough win against Grant last week. They’ll look to keep the winning going on the road at Chavez this week.
Honorable Mentions: Chatsworth (3-3), Chavez (3-3), Poly (3-4), Taft (2-4), North Hollywood (2-3)
Southern Section rankings
1. Sierra Canyon Trailblazers (6-0)
The Trailblazers' defense continues to be one of the most impressive units in the state, let alone the Valley. They’ve got a real test on the road at Serra this week.
2. Burroughs Bears (5-1)
The Bears jumped back to number two after a dominant performance against Pasadena last Friday night. They’ve got a battle on their hands when they go on the road to face another squad out of Pasadena, the Muir Mustangs.
3. Notre Dame Knights (4-2)
It was a disappointing result for Notre Dame at Sierra Canyon last week, but the Knights still have the look of a team that could go far this season. They’ll have a chance to get back on the horse on the road at Serra this week.
4. Village Christian Crusaders (4-2)
The Crusaders slipped a couple of spots after a rough night on the road at Aquinas resulting in a 46-26 defeat. They’ll look to rebound when Big Bear pays a visit this week.
5. Crescenta Valley Falcons (4-2)
Crescenta Valley saw their win streak come to a halt on the road at Muir last Friday night. The Falcons will look to rebound in a big way versus Burbank this week.
6. Heritage Christian Warriors (4-2)
The Warriors fell three spots this week after an upset loss to Valley Christian at home. Heritage will get a crack at league-rival Aquinas at home on Saturday night.
7. Viewpoint Patriots (4-2)
The Patriots are quietly putting together a good season in Calabasas. They will get a chance to make it even better if they can avenge their 41-point loss to the Vikings in 2022.
8. Chaminade Eagles (3-3)
The Eagles check in at number eight this week after a 34-7 defeat to Serra last week. It's been an up-and-down campaign for Chaminade, but they will have a good chance to get back over the 500. Mark when they take on the Alemany Warriors this week.
9. Harvard-Westlake Wolverines (3-3)
The Wolverines have been a roller coaster of a team this season, trading wins and losses every week. They’ll try to put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season against St. Anthony at home Saturday night.
10. Calabasas Coyotes (2-4)
The Coyotes nabbed the final spot on the list, but they have some work to do to stay there. They have an important clash in the Marmonte against Simi Valley at home this week.
Honorable Mentions: Crespi Celts (2-4), Burbank (2-4), Saint Genevieve (1-4), Alemany (1-5), Campbell Hall (1-5)
