The Power List: Eighth Edition
Inside the penultimate edition of the VST Power rankings, league rivalries have shaken up the list on both the Southern and City section sides. Granada Hills ascends back near the top after another dominant performance, while the previously unbeaten Panorama Pythons took a tumble after suffering their first loss of the season. Sierra Canyon holds strong at number one, while Crescenta Valley climbs to their highest position headed into a huge matchup against the team sitting at number two. Here is the VST Power List heading into Week nine of the regular season:
1. Birmingham Patriots (6-2)
It was another week of dominance for the Patriots, who blanked El Camino to stay entrenched at the number one spot. Their defense has allowed just one touchdown in their first three West Valley contests.
2. Granada Hills Highlanders (5-2-1)
The Highlanders followed up their big win at Cleveland with a dominant outing on the road at Taft Friday night. They are two wins away from locking themselves into the Open Division come playoff time.
3. Kennedy Cougars (6-2)
The Cougars played a sloppy game against Sylmar last week, but they sit at the number three spot because they took care of business. They will have a chance to lock up the Valley Mission Thursday night at home versus Panorama.
4. San Fernando Tigers (8-1)
The Tigers made a statement in their victory on the road versus previously unbeaten Panorama. They’ll have the week off but you can bet they will be keeping a close eye on that matchup between Kennedy and Panorama this week.
5. Arleta Mustangs (7-1)
It's been a season to remember for the Mustangs as they remain unbeaten in the East Valley after a 10-0 victory over Chavez last week. They hit the road to face a pesky North Hollywood team this week.
6. Cleveland Cavaliers (6-2)
The Cavaliers didn’t look sharp on the road at Chatsworth, but they did what they needed to do. They will need to play a clean game when they host Birmingham for Senior night.
7. Panorama Pythons (7-1)
The Pythons were left reeling after suffering their first loss of the season at the hands of San Fernando last week. All is not lost, as they can still line themselves up for a share of the Valley Mission crown if they can beat Kennedy on the road Thursday night.
8. El Camino Real Royals (3-5)
It was a rough night for the Royals, taking on the kings of the City Section in Birmingham last Friday night. They will look to get back on the winning track against Granda Hills.
9. Chavez Eagles (4-4)
It was a disappointing afternoon for the Eagles who could not finish drives on the road at Arleta. The league championship[ seems unlikely following the loss but the Eagles still have plenty to play for with the playoffs around the corner. They’ll take on Poly at home this week.
10. Poly Parrots (4-4)
The Parrots find themselves back in the top ten after a win on the road at Grant. Poly has surprised many with how well they have played this season. A win against Chavez would be their fourth win in the East Valley this season, something the Parrots haven’t done since 2013.
Honorable mentions this week: Sylmar (4-5), Van Nuys (4-4), Verdugo Hills (4-5) Chatsworth (3-5)
1. Sierra Canyon Trailblazers (8-0)
Another week, another dominant performance for the Trailblazers. They’ll be tested at home this week when they face the Serra Cavaliers.
2. Burroughs Bears (7-1)
The Bears have had a season to remember and are in prime position to lock up the Pacific-Upper League title with a win over Crescenta Valley this Friday night.
3. Crescenta Valley Falcons (6-2)
The Falcons had their way against Pasadena last week and will now turn their attention to Burroughs. The Falcons will look to go a perfect 5-0 on the road with a victory over the Bears.
4. Chaminade Eagles (5-3)
Chaminade handled a tough test in Notre Dame last week to move to 2-1 in the Mission League. They’ll look to keep the momentum going when they face Bishop Amat on the Smurf turf this week.
5. Heritage Christian Warriors (5-3)
The Warriors picked up a much-needed win in the Ironwood League last Friday night versus Big Bear. This week they’ll face their bitter rivals Village Christian in the Bible Bowl.
6. Village Christian Crusaders (5-3)
The Crusaders had a rough go of it when they took on Ontario Christian at home last week. The attention now turns towards their matchup against Heritage Christian.
7. Notre Dame Knights (4-4)
The Knights are officially in a tailspin after dropping their third straight game in the Mission League. They’ll have a good chance to get back on the winning track when they take on Alemany this week.
8. Viewpoint Patriots (5-3)
The Patriots fought hard, but Rio Hondo Prep proved why they have not tasted defeat in 2023 in their victory last Friday night. It has still been a good season for the Patriots, and they will be gunning for their sixth victory on homecoming night versus Hoover.
