The Power List: Ninth Edition

The latest edition of the VST Power rankings has arrived as the regular season winds to a conclusion. The Birmingham Patriots and Sierra Canyon Trailblazers continue to dominate at the top spots this week. Still, the East Valley and Valley Mission claim most of the real estate on the city section side of the list. The Pacific-upper has two squads on the Southern section list, while the Mission League keeps a strong presence in the rankings. Here are the VST power rankings headed into the final week of regular season football in the SFV this week:

City Section rankings

1. Birmingham Patriots (7-2)

Birmingham owns real estate here at the top of the rankings in the same fashion that they own real estate at the summit of the city section. The Patriots pushed their win streak over city opponents to 38 games with their victory over Cleveland last week.

2. Granada hills Highlanders (6-2-1)

The Highlanders found their groove in the second half of the season and looked phenomenal in their victory last week. A win in the regular season finale should all but lock up a spot in the Open Division when the playoff brackets come out this weekend.

3. Kennedy Cougars (7-2)

The Cougars handled business in a big way against Panorama at home and have locked up the Valley Mission football crown heading into the regular season finale. This will be a dangerous team when the playoffs begin.

4. San Fernando Tigers (8-1)

The Tigers had the week off and were hoping for a Panorama victory to get them back in the league title race. That did not happen, but the Tigers can still finish 9-1 with a victory this week, which is a phenomenal turnaround from where they finished last week.

5. Arleta Mustangs (8-1)

The Mustangs went on the road and beat up North Hollywood to lock up the East Valley crown. They have a good shot at finishing with 9 wins to go along with their league championship and should be looking at a spot in Division I come playoffs.

6. Cleveland Cavaliers (6-3)

It was a rough night against Birmingham for the Cavaliers, but that comes as no surprise, seeing as the Patriots have done that to everyone for three years now. The Cavs are still a tough team that rightfully believes the best is yet to come for them when the postseason begins.

7. Panorama Pythons (7-2)

The Pythons have hit the skids after a great beginning to the season with back-to-back defeats to San Fernando and Kennedy. They’ll look to turn things around on Senior Night versus Canoga Park this week.

8. El Camino Real Royals (3-6)

This might seem unorthodox for a team three games below .500 to make the list, but the Royals are much better than their record suggests. Take them lightly if you want, this team will be tough out in the playoffs. They’ll look to end the regular season on a high note Thursday night against Cleveland.

9. Poly Parrots (5-4)

The Parrots continue to surprise with how well they have played relative to what their expectations were coming into the season. A win in their finale would give the Parrots five victories in the league, something they haven’t accomplished since 2010.

10. Sylmar Spartans (5-5)

The Spartans have ridden the roller coaster all season long and have finished the regular season at .500. This team has plenty of firepower though, and if the bracket falls right, this could be a team that could make a deep run in the playoffs.

Southern Section rankings

1. Sierra Canyon Trailblazers (9-0)

The Trailblazers survived their toughest test to date last Friday night versus Serra and will take on Chaminade looking to finish the regular season undefeated.

2. Burroughs Bears (8-1)

The Bears have had a tremendous season and will walk away with the Pacific-Upper championship in their pockets as they turn their eye to rival Burbank to close the season.

3. Notre Dame Knights (5-4)

The Knights picked up their first win in the Mission League with a comfortable victory over Alemany last week. They have a tough test to close out the season on the road at Bishop Amat.

4. Village Christian Crusaders (6-3)

The Crusaders continued their recent run of dominance in the Bible Bowl with a win over Heritage Christian last week. They’ll be looking to finish with a winning record in the Ironwood League with a victory on the road at Valley Christian this week.

5. Crescenta Valley Falcons (6-3)

The Falcons played tough but came up short against an excellent Burroughs team last week. The Falcons will look to dust themselves off and finish strong in their finale at home versus Arcadia.

6. Viewpoint Patriots (6-3)

The Patriots picked up a win over Hoover at home last week. They’ll try to pull the upset on the road against Brentwood in the regular season finale.

7. Chaminade Eagles (5-4)

The Eagles took it on the chin against rival Notre Dame last Friday night, and the road to the playoffs doesn’t get any easier when they take on Sierra Canyon on the road this week.

8. Heritage Christian Warriors (5-4)

The Warriors are licking their wounds after losing the Bible Bowl for the third straight season. They will try to gain momentum before the postseason with a win on the road at Ontario Christian this week.
