Agoura stuns Burroughs 42-18 to advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 7 Quarterfinal Round
The Agoura Chargers shocked the world on Friday night, as they beat a heavily favored Burroughs squad by the final of 42-18 to advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 7 Quarterfinals. Junior wide receiver Brady Dieffenbach of Agoura caught three receiving touchdowns from senior quarterback Harrison Novak. Heading into the contest, Burroughs was coming off a 48-13 win over Burbank to secure its first Pacific League title since 2015 while on the other hand, Agoura was fresh off a 55-28 loss to Moorpark but, somehow got in the CIF SS Division 7 Playoffs via at large bid. The winner of the game would either play on the road with Muir(Pasadena) or Diamond Ranch(Pomona).
The Chargers got the scoring going in the 1st quarter as Harrison Novak, threw a touchdown pass to Brady Dieffenbach which happened to be the only score of the period. The 2nd quarter went back and forth as Burroughs got on the board on a receiving touchdown by Jake Scozzola. Then the Bears pulled out in front 12-7 on a 93-yard touchdown score by Ethan Hubbell while Agoura put up a touchdown of their own as Harrison Novak threw a touchdown pass to Zeke Bussiere. The Bolts were up 14-12 at the halftime break. The 2nd half was all Bolts as Brady Dieffenbach got two more receiving touchdowns in the 3rd and 4th quarter to propel them to an upset victory over Burroughs. “We adjusted well at halftime, Burroughs is a very well-coached football team we knew it was going to be a grind,” said Agoura head coach Dustin Croick. Croick said Harrison Novak is a leader and showed it off tonight in the win over Burroughs. “They competed their butts off all game long,” said Burroughs head coach Jesse Craven. Craven went on to say that this year’s senior group had a commitment to excellence for the past 4 years. The John Burroughs Bears 2023 season has come to a close while Agoura will continue on in the CIF Southern Section Division 7 Playoffs against Muir in the Quarterfinal round which will take place at John Muir High School.
