2023-2024 Pacific League Boys Basketball Media Day
The first-ever Pacific League boys basketball media didn’t disappoint, as eight teams in Arcadia, Burbank, Burroughs(Burbank), Crescenta Valley, Glendale, Hoover(Glendale), Muir(Pasadena), and Pasadena enter this upcoming season with new hope and top-level expectations. Listed below are last year’s results from the eight teams and previews of each team heading into the new season.
2022-2023 record 19-10 overall, 10-4 Pacific League(3rd place)
CIF SS Playoff result lost 67-65 to Shalhevet(Los Angeles) in the first round
Entering his 6th season as the head coach of the Arcadia Apaches, Nick Wallace is looking to build off another winning season from a year ago and have a shot at challenging Pasadena and Crescent Valley for the Pacific League title. Players to be on the lookout for this season for the Apaches, are senior guard Jordan Dollar, and sophomore guard Noa Eteuati-Edwards. The Apaches will begin the 2023-2024 with a road contest against Sylmar on Wednesday, November 15th.
2022-2023 record 9-16 overall, 5-9 Pacific League(5th place)
Steve Eshleman enters his first full season as the head coach of the Burbank Bulldogs boys’s basketball program and comes with many years of coaching high school basketball as he had stops at St Francis and Van Nuys high schools before coming to Burbank High to lead this young team. The team will be built around junior guard Kevin Dehbashain who is looking to have a breakout season under Eshleman. The Bulldogs have a young team that could potentially result in an exciting season but with Eshleman’s experience, it could be a game changer for the program. Burbank will kick off the 2023-2024 season at the Bravo Tournament on November 13th.
2022-2023 record 10-18 overall 4-10 Pacific League(7th place)
It’s a new era in John Burroughs boys basketball as Austin Pope enters his first season as a high school head basketball coach as he takes over for Allan Ellis. Pope was a former Burbank Bulldog star and played collegiately at Chaminade University in Hawaii along with a brief stint in the NBA G-League. The Bears had a season to forget a year ago, but with renewed hope, this young team led by senior guard Chase Kardosh, and junior guard Jagger Topp could potentially help the team have an exciting season under first-year head coach Austin Pope. Other players to be on the lookout for include senior Omar Paynid, and sophomore Evan Baker who will be counted on to contribute this season. Both Payind and Baker are transfers from Burbank High School. Burroughs will begin its season on Monday, November 14th when they host Arleta High School with tip-off slated for 7 PM.
Crescenta Valley Falcons
2022-2023 record 24-5 overall, 12-2 Pacific League(2nd place)
CIF SS Playoff result: Lost to Tesoro 83-45 in the 2nd round
Shawn Zargarian who is the reigning Pacific League’s head coach of the year alongside Pasadena’s Anthony Brooks is looking to build off a winning season a year ago with the Falcons, who have high hopes in challenging Pasadena again for the Pacific League championship. Senior guard Vaugh Zargarian will be counted on to lead the Falcons to another winning season. The Falcons will begin the 2023-2024 season at the Steven Ly Tournament on Monday, November 13th.
2022-2023 record 13-16 overall, 4-10 Pacific League(6th place)
Coming off a losing season a year ago, Art Samontina enters his 2nd season at the helm for Glendale Basketball. Senior forward/center Anthony Agakhanyan will be tasked to take on a larger role in leading this young team back to its winning ways as it won’t be easy for the Nitros in a tough Pacific League that is loaded with talent. The Nitros will begin the 2023-2024 season against La Sale(Pasadena) on Tuesday, November 14th.
2022-2023 record 5-20 overall, 0-14 Pacific League(8th place)
Led by veteran head coach Jack Van Patten, the Hoover Tornados will be tasked to build on a losing season from a year ago. If they do so they can potentially have an exciting season as they will count on sophomore guard Justin Herrera along with senior guard Zach Van Patten. Hoover will begin the 2023-2024 season on Monday, November 13th when they take on Monrovia.
2022-2023 record 13-15 overall, 7-7 Pacific League(4th place)
CIF SS Playoff result: lost 49-62 to Eisenhower(Rialto) in the 1st round
Entering his first season as the head coach of the John Muir Mustangs basketball program, Brenton Moore is tasked to build off a losing season and the team’s first-round exit to Eisenhower. The top returning players for Muir will be headlined by last year’s Pacific League’s Honorable Mention in senior guard Brandon Hardy along with fellow senior guard Bradley Jones. Muir will begin the 2023-2024 season on Thursday, November 16th against Hart(Newhall).
2022-2023 record 19-9 overall, 13-1 Pacific League(1st place, defending Pacific League champions)
CIF SS Playoff result: lost to AGBU(Canoga Park) 45-44 in the 1st round
Led by last year’s co-coach of the year in the Pacific League, Anthony Brooks, the Pasadena Bulldogs should be one of the favorites to win the Pacific League along with Crescenta Valley and Arcadia. With high expectations, this team will be led by returning all-Pacific League 2nd team recipient Desmond Every who will be a junior this season, along with senior point guard Jovan Jester. Both Every and Jester are team captains heading into the new season. Pasadena tips off the 2023-2024 season with the Rose City Roundball Classic on Monday, November 27th which will go until Saturday, December 2nd.
The 2023-2024 high school basketball season begins on Monday, November 13th and it will go until Thursday, February 1st. Be sure to tune in for some great Pacific League boys basketball action all season long.
