Burroughs Boys Basketball 2023-2024 season preview

The John Burroughs Bears finished the 2022-23 season with a record of 10-18 overall and 4-10 in Pacific League play, and changes were made. A brand new era of Burroughs boy’s basketball kicks off in the 2023-24 season as Austin Pope begins his first season as the new head coach of the program as he takes over for Allan Ellis. Pope, a former Burbank Bulldogs basketball star from 2008-2012, has a lot of familiarity with the Pacific League. His playing career included stops in the NBA G-League and playing at the college level from 2014-2018 at Chaminade University in Hawaii.

The players to look out for to help with the turnaround are seniors Chase Kardosh (guard), Arthur Gabrielyan (forward/center), and Omar Payind (guard). Kardosh and Payind are both returning All-Pacific League’s honorable mention recipients. Other players to be on the lookout for are junior guard Jagger Topp and sophomore guard Evan Baker. Both Baker and Payind are coming in as transfers from Burbank High School.

Rounding out the coaching staff for Pope will be Erik Willis (Head Frosh Coach/Varsity Assistant), Malique Johnson (Head JV Coach/Varsity Assistant), along with varsity assistant coaches, Scott Koulouvaris, and Fredrick Hawthorne. Koulouvaris is the only holder from last year’s staff as he served with Adam Hockberg and Alan Ellis before being retained with Austin Pope. “We have a great program all across the board, and I’m excited to get it going,” said Pope. He also mentioned that this team will be built around the 4 seniors headlined by Chase Kardosh, and Arthur Gabrielyan, along with Juniors Jagger Topp and Jacob Samontina.

The Burroughs Bears will officially kick off the 2023-2024 season with their season opener on Monday, November 13th against Arleta. Other key dates to look out for are when the Bears kick off Pacific League play on Tuesday, December 5th against Glendale at Home, along with both matchups with Burbank (Friday, January 12th at JBHS, Thursday, February 1st at BHS). Pope will be making his return to Burbank High School in the final Burbank-Burroughs game on February 1st. Stay tuned for coverage of the John Burroughs Boys Basketball program all season long.
