Burroughs Girls Basketball 2023-2024 season preview


The John Burroughs Bears girls’ basketball team is entering the 2023-24 season coming off an 18-11, 12-2 season, and an early CIF playoff 1st round exit to Paramount a year ago. The Bears are coming into this season with new hope and high expectations under long-time head coach, Victoria (Vikki) Oganyan. The coaching staff under Oganyan, includes veteran assistants, Art Sullivan, who will be in charge of the junior varsity squad, along with long-time varsity assistant coach and Burroughs legend, Bill Dunaway. Oganyan also added Randy Dudley to her staff. Dudley enters his first season as an assistant coach on the varsity squad.

The players to be on the lookout for are seniors Ashley Martin (forward), Mia Paz (forward/center), junior guard Mariam Fahs, and sophomore forward/center Valentina Morales. Fahs played for the Tunisian national basketball team up in Jordan and shared her thoughts on her summer events, “It was a great experience, we played in the Arab championship and finished in 2nd, and also finished 4th in the African championship games.”Fahs also shared her excitement about the upcoming season when asked about playing in Hawaii for a tournament to start the season, as it will be her first time visiting Hawaii.

“We have a great group of kids that show up day in and day out to our workouts, and our preparation for the upcoming season has been outstanding,” said Oganyan. She also admits that this year’s team will be built around the two seniors Ashley Martin and Mia Paz, along with junior Mariam Fahs, but also says that sophomore Valentina Morales, will look to contribute more this year.

Burroughs will tip off the 2023-2024 season in the Maui Tournament in Hawaii, from Wednesday, November 15th until Saturday, November 18th. Other key dates to the Burroughs girls’ basketball calendar are when they begin Pacific League play against Glendale High School on December 5th along with the John Burroughs High School girls’ varsity basketball west coast holiday festival from Tuesday, December 26th until Saturday, December 30th. There are also the two matchups with Burbank on Friday, January 12th at Burroughs High School and again at Burbank on Thursday, February 1st. Another key date on the calendar will be Tuesday, January 30th against Muir when the graduating seniors from both the boys and girls teams will be celebrated.
