Burbank High School Boys Basketball 2023-2024 season preview
The 2022-2023 Winter season for the Bulldogs had turmoil in the program when Sid Cooke was dismissed midseason with Michael Lance serving as the interim head coach the rest of last season. This Winter, Steve Eshleman enters his first season as the head coach of the program as he is tasked to rebuild the team from the ground up. Eshleman comes with a veteran mind that has coached high school basketball for many years, and most recently, he served as the head basketball coach of the girl’s team at Van Nuys High School. The Bulldogs finished last season with a 9-16 overall record and a league record of 5-9 which was 5th place in the Pacific League behind Muir (Pasadena).
The coaching staff will feature Tighe Eshleman (Head JV Coach), Michael Lance (Head frosh coach), Ronald Mosley (Varsity assistant), and Ray Wataga (Varsity assistant). The player to watch this season is junior Kevin Dehbashian, as the Bulldogs will look to him to be one of the core players this season. Dehbashian is the lone returner from last year’s varsity squad. Other players to look out for are senior Beckett Sandis who is a transfer from St. Genevieve along with the Ong brothers Christopher (sophomore) and Jon (freshman).
“We’re excited because the kids have accepted the challenge in what we’re trying to change and to implement a new system,” said Eshleman. He also added that the team has shown a lot of growth since the kids got back to school but admits that the team is still young, but can have the potential to have an exciting season. He also said that this team isn’t built around one player as it’s built around the entire team when asked if Kevin Dehbashian is a building block for this young team.
The season is just around the corner as the Bulldogs will begin the 2023-2024 season at the Steven Ly Tournament at Bravo High School from Monday, November 13th, which will run until Thursday, November 16th. Other key dates on the calendar is when Burbank begins Pacific League Play with John Muir High School in Pasadena on Tuesday, December 5th, along with the home debut of Coach Steve Eshleman on Friday, December 15th against the Pasadena Bulldogs. The team will host its senior night celebration on Thursday, February 1st when they play cross-town rival Burroughs (Burbank) on the final day of the regular season.
