The John Burroughs Bears have high hopes entering the 2023-2024 season as they look to bounce back from a losing season a year ago. They finished last season with a 7-10-3 overall record and a league record of 3-8-3. Entering his 2nd season as the head coach of the Burroughs Boys Soccer program, Makan Afzali will look to get this team in the right direction after a rough first year at the helm. His coaching staff will feature Bilal Dahduli (Head JV Coach), George Flores (Frosh Head Coach), and varsity assistant coaches Ruben Escalara and Scott Elkin.

The players that will be tasked to help with the turnaround are seniors, Joseph Earl, Dominic Quijada, and juniors Danny Pascual and Alex Lorea. Lorea is a returning all-Pacific League 2nd team player. The Bears will kick off the 2023-2024 season with 2 home matches, first with Cleveland High School on Wednesday, November 15th, followed by another non-league contest with Notre Dame High School (Sherman Oaks) on Friday, November 17th.

“Last year was rough, it was my first year figuring out the system with players that we’re experienced at the varsity level,” said Bears coach Makan Afzali. He went on to say this year’s team is more experienced but feels confident about the team’s expectations this season. Afzali also admitted that his coaching staff is passionate about bringing great soccer to John Burroughs High School along with giving high praise to his top senior players Joseph Earl, Dominic Quijada, and star juniors Danny Pascual and Alex Lorea.

Other key dates on the calendar are when Burroughs takes on Glendale to kick off league play on Tuesday, December 5th, along with the two meetings with Burbank (1/12 at JBHS, 2/1 at BHS). Stay tuned for Burroughs Boys soccer all season long.
