The John Burroughs Bears kicked off action ahead of the start of the new season with a 4-1 loss to Cleveland High School in an exhibition-friendly contest. Yessina Gomez scored 2 goals in the 2nd half to propel the Cavaliers to a win over the Bears. The Bears still have to answer their goalkeeper situation as they are going with goalie by committee. Nadia Aguliar got the Bears their only goal in the 2nd half in the loss to Cleveland. Burroughs hopes to find their starting goalkeeper before their first regular season game against Louisville on Tuesday, November 28. Both the Cavaliers and Bears are coming off winning seasons a year ago that resulted in CIF Playoff appearances, as Burroughs fell to St Genevieve in the 2nd round of the CIF Southern Section Playoffs. Cleveland finished as the runner-up in the City Section Division 1 finals before they fell to Bishop Amat in the CIF Southern California Division 3 Championship.

The Cavaliers got the scoring going by putting up two goals in the 1st half. Freshman forward Grace Burgos got the game’s first goal followed by sophomore midfielder Aubrey Deguzman, who recorded the 2nd goal of the game. The Cavaliers headed into the halftime break leading 2-0 over Burroughs. Cleveland came out of the halftime break picking up where they left off as they got two more goals from sophomore forward Yesenia Gomez. Burroughs also got their only score of the contest as senior midfielder Nadia Aguilar scored the only goal for the Bears.

“It’s a scrimmage, I’m more evaluating the team and seeing where we can improve and the score won’t matter until the games count,” said Burroughs head coach Brady Riggs. He went on to say that the team is still looking to find its starting goalkeeper as they are using the scrimmages to see who can win the job.

Burroughs will take on Monrovia on Monday, November 20th in another exhibition contest with kick-off set for 3:30 pm. Cleveland will take on Calabasas on Thursday, November 16th in an exhibition-friendly at-home; kick-off is currently set for 7:00 pm.
