Burroughs defeats Arleta 75-59 in Austin Pope's head coaching debut

The Austin Pope Era started with a bang as the John Burroughs Bears defeated the Arleta Mustangs 75-59 behind Jagger Topp’s 23-point game, including a 7 three-point shot performance in the win. Other notable performers for the Bears were senior guard Chase Kardosh with 17 points, junior big man Landon Everheart recorded 16 points and junior guard Jacob Samontina had a 12-point performance. Heading into the contest, the Bears are coming off a losing season while the Mustangs had a winning season a year ago. The Mustangs came so close to a CIF City Section Division 3 Championship as they fell to Garfield 47-42 in the final.

The 1st quarter was neck and neck as Landon Everhart got the scoring going for Burroughs with a 2-point shot while he was fouled and made the free throw to complete the 3-point play. Jorge Valdovinos of Arleta got the scoring going for Arleta as he made a 3-point shot on an assist from Emilano Lopez to tie the score at 3. The teams ended the first period of play tied at 18.

Jagger Topp got the scoring going for the Bears as he made a 3-pointer on an assist from Jordan Lewis to give the Bears the lead to start the 2nd period of play. The Mustangs made the game interesting in that quarter as Antonio Ruiz and Jorge Valdovinos played well for Arleta to keep up with Burroughs. The Bears took a 1-point lead heading into the halftime break when Chase Kardosh hit a 2-point jumper on an assist from Jagger Topp before the 1st half of play ended.

The Bears’ strong 2nd half propelled them to a win as Topp and Kardosh led the charge for Burroughs. “It was a rollercoaster of a game,” said Burroughs rookie head coach Austin Pope. “The boys came through no matter how nervous they felt and did a great job all game long.” He admitted that he told the guys to play their game when asked about their up-and-down first half. Pope also praised Jagger Topp for his 23-point performance and said that Topp’s 7 threes weren’t a surprise as he admitted that Topp does that at practice all the time.

Burroughs starts off the new season 1-0 in the Austin Pope coaching era while Arleta drops to 0-1 in the young season. The Bears will look to get off to a 2-0 start when they take on Van Nuys at home on Thursday, November 16th with tip-off slated for 4 PM. The Arleta Mustangs will go up against Vaughn (San Fernando) on Wednesday, November 15th with tip-off scheduled for 4 PM at Vaughn High School.
