On a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field, the John Burroughs Bears defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 3-2 in an exhibition friendly as Joey Earl scored the game-winning goal in the 2nd half. Heading into the new season, the Cavaliers, are fresh off a winning season that resulted in a CIF City Section Division 1 playoff appearance where they lost to El Camino real in the Quarterfinals. The Bears, on the other hand, had a losing season a year ago, but are entering the new season with new hope and sky-high expectations.

The Bears got off to a fast start in the 1st half as junior Danny Pascual and senior Dominic Quijada scored the first two goals of the contest. Junior Louis Piceno of Cleveland scored his team’s only goal in the half and the Cavaliers trailed by one goal to the Bears heading into the halftime break.

After the halftime break, Cleveland came out hungry to make the game interesting and senior Julio Martinez recorded the game-tying goal to make it a 2-2 game. Both teams thought they would end the match in a tie but senior Joey Earl came to the rescue and scored the go-ahead goal to give the Bears a 3-2 lead.

“I shot the ball and knew that I had an open shot,” said Earl. He also said that the whole team played well because of how well Dominic Quijada and Danny Pascual played in the contest.

“It was a great game, we battled it out on the field. In one of the practice games we did last Saturday, I noticed that the intensity dropped but it showed today,” said Bears coach Makan Afzali. He also praised Pascual and Quijada for their 1st half-goals and called them difference-makers for the team and players that he can rely on.

Burroughs will host Notre Dame in another exhibition friendly on Friday, November 17th at Memorial Field, as the opening kick will take place at 5 PM, while Cleveland will take on Hart on the same day with kick-off slated for 2 PM.
