Burroughs Lady Bears cruise to a 57-36 victory over Arcadia

The John Burroughs Lady Bears continued their undefeated streak with a 57-36 win over the Arcadia Apaches Friday afternoon behind the joint 12-point performances by Mariam Fahs and Claire Hackney. Burroughs entered off a 58-26 victory over Glendale last Tuesday night, while Arcadia defeated Hoover 68-13 on the same night.

In the 1st quarter, the Bears started on an 11-0 scoring run, Fahs and Hackney scored the first two baskets in the contest to give Burroughs a quick start. Ashley Martin and Elizabeth Amoroso had 2-point shots to extend the run to 15-0. Fahs had 3 layups made in the period. Arcadia was scoreless to start the contest, but Addie Areans nailed down the first 3-point shot of the game to get the scoring started for the Apaches. Burroughs led 21-8 at the end of the 1st period of play.

The Bears continued to carry the momentum in the 2nd quarter with Hackney and Alyssa Pracha hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to get the scoring going for Burroughs to make the score 27-8 in the 2nd period of play. Fahs picked up where she left off in the first quarter with 3 layups in the 2nd period of play. Burroughs headed into the halftime break with a 38-16 lead over Arcadia.

After the intermission, the Bears continued to pull away at the start of the 3rd quarter with a 3-point basket by Elizabeth Amoroso along with 2 layups by Hackney. Hackey also hit a 3-point shot to make a 50-19 game for Burroughs. Maddie Tran of Arcadia had two 3-point buckets in the 3rd period of play and nailed down both free throw attempts to help the Apaches get to 24 points before the end of the quarter.

The 4th quarter didn’t provide a lot of scoring for both teams as Burroughs’s only score came from the free throw line with Anna Phillips making 1 of 2 shots at the charity stripe. Arcadia’s scoring in the 4th came from Tran, Areans, Shelby Chung, and Emi Narkuo. Tran was Arcadia’s leading scorer with 19 points in the loss.

“Our chemistry is perfect, we’re not playing selfishly and great ball movement with good play execution,” said Bears star guard Mariam Fahs. She praised Hackney for being an elite spot-up 3-point shooter and said she was a game-driver against Arcadia.

Burroughs improves to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in Pacific League play, while Arcadia drops to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Pacific League play. The Burroughs Bears will have a road contest against Pasadena on Tuesday, December 12th at 6:45 PM where they will look to go 9-0 on the season.
