On the first day of the John Burroughs High School Girls Varsity Basketball Holiday Classic, The Burbank Bulldogs came on the losing end over the Unicorns of the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies by the final score of 43-39. Before the contest, Burbank had a tough 51-30 loss to Crescenta Valley and LACES dropped a 74-60 contest to Palisades.
Both teams had a low-scoring first quarter with Mila Sano getting the scoring going with a 2-point layup for LACES and Lauren Navaro recording the 1st score for Burbank. Sincere Aubrey and Emily Galoustian both had 3’s in the same period which was a bright spot for both teams in the start of play. The Unicorns ended the 1st quarter of play with a 1-point lead. The 2nd quarter was more of the same for both teams, resulting in a 13-13 tie entering the halftime break.
The Bulldogs came out of the halftime break going on a 19-2 scoring run. Nikela Damasen, Andrea Aparicio, and Arevita Keshishyan helped Burbank with the scoring run in the period. LACES’s Aubrey ended the scoring run of Burbank with a 2-point teardrop. Burbank ended the 3rd quarter with a 30-19 lead over the Unicorns. Burbank thought they had momentum heading into the final quarter of play. However, LACES found a way to complete the comeback with a strong offensive showing by Katie Chubia.
“I felt like it was an even game on both ends, our only downfall was giving up 19 points to LACES in the 4th quarter,” said Burbank head coach Kris Jacoubrian. Jacoubrian admitted that if we don’t grow from this loss then you are not sure what you want out of it when asked about the team’s 19-2 scoring run in the 3rd quarter.
