Santa Paula beats Burbank 55-45
Fresh off snapping a 4-game losing streak to Golden Valley on Thursday night, The Burbank Bulldogs suffered a 45-55 loss to the Santa Paula Cardinals, behind a 25-point performance by Aryana Lopez. Before the contest against Burbank, Santa Paula came off a 59-58 loss to Pilibos back on Wednesday night. Lauren Navarro led the Burbank Bulldogs with 13 points in the loss.
In the 1st quarter of play, both teams scored in the first possession of play. Lauren Navarro recorded a 2-point layup and Jaylnn Rico responded with a layup of her own to tie up the score at 2. Navarro had two points in the quarter, but Andrea Aparicio, and Lili Okharyan both had points in the first period of play for Burbank. Santa Paula led 11-9 at the end of the 1st quarter. The 2nd quarter was all Cardinals as they held Burbank to 2 points in the quarter and went on a 14-2 scoring run after Nikela Damasen’s only basket came via a bank shot. Santa Paula ended the 1st half of play with a 28-11 lead over Burbank.
After the halftime break, the Bulldogs fought back despite the appearance that Santa Paula was going to blow them out of the water. They found their way back into the contest by overcoming the 17-point deficit when they cut the Santa Paula lead to 4 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Burbank continued its comeback hopes in the 4th quarter, but at the same time, Santa Paula had answers to ending the comeback. Alyse Ramirez recorded a 2-point layup to seal the game for the Cardinals before regulation ended.
“I wouldn’t say blowing it, but mistakes were made. I thought Burbank stepped up and adjusted well in the 2nd half and did a great job doing it,” said Santa Paula head coach Frank Jordan. Jordan also was proud of Aryana Lopez when asked about her 25-point performance and said that she gets in the gym and lives it in.
“If they are not learning then they are not doing the right things,” said Burbank head coach Kris Jacoubrian when asked about the team’s 45-55 loss to Santa Paula. Jacoubrian said that Burbank had 40 turnovers today which hurt the team more than making or missing shots.
Burbank drops to 4-13 while Santa Paula improves to 10-7. The Bulldogs will resume Pacific League play in the new year against The Hoover Tornados on Thursday, January 4th at 5:15 PM.
