Burroughs Boys Falls to Arcadia 84-66
The Arcadia Apaches bounced back from a 70-50 loss to Cypress to defeat the John Burroughs Bears 84-66 behind the combined 37-point performance by Noah Edwards and Mansour Sanneh. Chase Kardosh and Landon Everhart combined for 36 points in the loss for the Bears. Burroughs entered the contest with a 2-point loss to Bravo. This was a makeup game from the Friday, December 8th game that was postponed due to illness ravaging the Apaches roster.
The Bears started the 1st quarter with an 8-0 scoring run with buckets by Jacob Samontina, and Kardosh, while Jordan Dollard stopped the scoring run with an and-1 conversion to get the scoring jump-started for the Apaches. Burroughs continued to pull away in the 1st quarter with points by Omar Payind, Everhart, and Jagger Topp to help the Bears propel a 5-point lead over Arcadia at the end of the 1st quarter.
The Apaches found a way to get back in the game and gain momentum in the 2nd quarter with strong offensive performances by Edwards, and Sanneh. Mateo Ingersoll had the play of the night with a slam dunk to give Arcadia a 2-point lead over Burroughs. Edwards ended the 2nd quarter with a buzzer-beating 3-point shot to give Arcadia a 38-27 lead at the halftime break.
The Apaches stormed out of the halftime break with a strong 2nd half. Sanneh started the scoring for Arcadia with a 2-point layup, finishing 7 points in the 3rd quarter. The Bears attempted a 4th quarter comeback, but the Apaches continued to pull away to victory.
“We played well in the 1st quarter, and we took our foot off the gas in the 2nd quarter and onward,” said interim Bears coach Malique Johnson. He said that the team needs to get off to better starts and that their game against Glendale is a must-win game since it will matter for playoff positioning in the Pacific League.
Arcadia improves to 12-5 overall, and 6-0 in Pacific League play good for sole possession of first place. Burroughs drops to 11-9 overall, 2-4 in the Pacific League, and in fourth place over Glendale in league standings. The Apaches will play this evening, Tuesday, January 9th at Hoover, while Burroughs will play a road contest at Glendale. Both games will tip off at 5:15 PM.
