The Burbank Bulldogs had to settle for a 2-2 draw with the Muir Mustangs as Juan Aviles scored the game-tying penalty kick goal with time expiring in the 2nd half. Burbank entered the contest coming off a 2-0 win over Hoover, while Muir was fresh off a 2-0 loss to Burroughs before the contest. These two teams met previously on Tuesday, December 5th at John Muir High School, with both teams dueling to another draw.

The Bulldogs started the scoring in the 1st half by Aram Hovanessian in the 6th minute of play to give Burbank a 1-0 lead. Following the goal, George Atallah missed an attempt at goal in the 13th minute of the half when the ball went wide right. Hovanessian missed another opportunity in the 19th minute of the period. Muir had a chance to score when Arthur Eacandon had possession of the ball and kicked the ball off the crossbar. Burbank headed into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead over Muir.

Following intermission, the Bulldogs had missed goal chances to start the 2nd half of play by Rigoberto Garcia, Hovanessian, and Andre Zargaryan. Muir got on the board to tie the game at 1 with a clutch goal by Jai Brooks in the 12th minute of play in the half. The Bulldogs responded with Hovanessian scoring his second of the game in the 23rd minute of play. Aviles took advantage of a Burbank foul in the box when he stepped up to the spot and recorded the game-tying goal with time expiring in the 2nd half.

“We let another one get away from us, a team that we should have put away but we didn’t,” said Bulldogs coach Johnny Rotunno. Rotunno added that the penalty at the last second wasn’t fun but it was an unfortunate ending.

Burbank’s record now sits at 6-3-4 overall and 2-2-3 in Pacific League play, while Muir stands at 7-6-2 overall and 0-5-2 in Pacific League play. Burbank will face crosstown rival Burroughs on Friday, January 12th at 3:45 PM while Muir will face crosstown rival Pasadena on the same day and same time.
