John Burroughs softball 2024 season preview

After finishing off a season where the John Burroughs Bears won its first Pacific League title since 2017. This team is entering a season where they are looking to get their monkey off their back after getting stopped in the CIF Southern Section semifinals 2 seasons in a row. The Bears finished last season with a 24-5 overall record and a 9-1 record in Pacific League play with a loss to Fullerton in the semi-final round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs. This team is entering the new season with skyrocketing expectations.

Entering his 5th year leading the program and his second stint with Burroughs, Doug Nicol has a coaching staff that will help this team attempt to get this team to win back-to-back league titles for the first time since 2015 and 2016. Nicols’s coaching staff will feature Krystin Thomas who will be leading the Junior Varsity quad with Louie Binda assisting Thomas with JV. Other members include Katie Taix (varsity associate head coach/pitching and catching) Laban Freeman (1st base coach/outfield) with fellow varsity assistants Bill Dunnaway, Sheila Oassay, and Lysette Perez. Nicol will also serve as the team’s 3rd base coach along with his head coaching duties.

The players to look out for in this deep roster will be seniors Alyssa Rosales(returning all Pacific League 2nd team), Gizelle Rangsiyawong (returning All-Pacific League 2nd team), Phoebe Sprangler (returning all Pacific League 2nd team). Emerson Coblentz juniors Chloe Centeno (returning all Pacific League 1st team) and Alyssa Morales, sophomore Karlee Earl (returning Pacific Leagues Honorable Mention). Other players to be on the lookout for are seniors Eliza Torres and Lily Essaakhanian, along with freshman Alyssa Cortez, Sophia Rangsiyawong (younger sister of Gizelle Rangsiyawong), Valentina Reyes, and Chloe Zavala.

“I’m ready to go, these girls are ready to work hard and put in a lot of hours during the fall season,” said Bears head coach Doug Nicol. Nicol added that this team has taken it to another level when asked if they made a lot of progress after losing to Fullerton last season in the CIF Southern Section playoff semifinal.

Important dates to be on the lookout for in the 2024 calendar for Burroughs softball will be Saturday, February, 10th when they will begin the new season at the Hart Tournament with a doubleheader against El Camino Real, and another opponent to be determined later. The Bears home opener will be against Golden Valley on Tuesday, February 13th, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Pacific League play will kick off on Tuesday, March 12th against Arcadia at 3:30 p.m. while senior night for the graduating seniors class of 2024 will take place on Wednesday, April 17th against crosstown rival Burbank with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Stay tuned for coverage of John Burroughs High School softball all season long.
