Burroughs Lady Bears cruise by Paloma Valley 62-37 to advance to the 2nd round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2A Playoffs
The John Burroughs Lady Bears easily cruised by the Paloma Valley Wildcats 62-37 to move on to the 2nd round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2A Playoffs behind a combined 48-point night for Mariam Fahs, Valentina Morales, and Ashley Martin. Paloma Valley entered the opening round playoff contest by coming off a 46-43 loss to Poly, while Burroughs came off a dominant 53-17 win over cross-town rival Burbank back on Thursday, February 1st.
The Bears started the game by going on a 6-0 scoring run with Anna Phillips recording a 3-point shot to jumpstart the scoring, while Morales made 1 out of 2 free throws and Martin recorded a 2-point layup. Gina Misaita got the scoring going for the Wildcats with a 2-point bank shot to get Paloma Valley on the board. Fahs had 2 points in the 1st quarter with a layup and a 2 point jump shot. Burroughs ended the 1st period of play with a 20-11 lead. Elizabeth Amoroso and LaNiyah Jordan nailed 3-point shots to start the 2nd quarter for their teams while Fahs continued her strong showing in the 2nd quarter to help the Bears lead 36-18 at the halftime break.
Following intermission Mariam Fahs and Ashley Martin scored back-to-back layups to help Burroughs increase the lead to 25. Valentia Morales and Anna Phillips helped the Bears push the lead up to 53-32 at the end of the 3rd quarter of play. Burroughs continued to put the game away with a strong final period with scores by Martin, Fahs, and Ella Anderson.
“We were locked in defensively and played great offensively with a lot of girls stepping up,” said Lady Bears coach Vikki Ognayan. Ognayan admitted that it was a team effort when asked if Mariam Fahs was the reason why the Lady Bears got the victory over Paloma Valley.
The Paloma Valley Wildcats, 2023-2024 season has come to a close, while the John Burroughs Bears will move on to the 2nd round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 Playoffs. The Bears will travel to Aquinas on the road with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line. Tipoff between Burroughs and Aquinas will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10th at Aquinas High School in San Bernardino.
