John Burroughs Bears Baseball 2024 season preview

The John Burroughs Bears enter the 2024 season with new hope to attempt to win another CIF Championship after winning it back in 2022. Last season, the Bears finished with a 12-12 overall record and 8-6 in Pacific League play with a loss to Lakewood in the CIF Southern Section Playoffs. Matt Magallon enters his 5th season and was the man that led Burroughs to a CIF Championship back in 2022. His coaching staff features Joe Rodriguez (Head JV Coach) Gio Macias (Frosh Head Coach), and assistant coaches Mitch Kellogg (varsity assistant coach), Kam Diaz (pitching coach), Ian Nord (varsity assistant coach), Frank Taormina (varsity assistant coach), Ryan Daniels (JV assistant coach), Revin Diego (frosh assistant coach) and Moises Marroquin (frosh assistant coach). Taormina served as the head baseball coach at Glendale High School last season before coming to Burroughs.

The players to be on the lookout for this season are senior outfielder Nate Chapman (returning 1st team all-Pacific League and Pacific University Commit) and junior pitcher Kenny Montgomery. Chapman will be playing college baseball at Pacific University next season. “Every year presents excitement because we had a great fall and winter seasons with this group of kids and I'm very excited about this team,” said Bears head coach Matt Magallon. Magallon admits that he’s been friends with Frank Taormina for many years and is excited to work with him on the same staff after coaching on opposite sides of the spectrum for 1 year and calls Nate Chapman a champion when asked about Taormina’s addition to the coaching staff along with Chapman’s commitment to Pacific University.

“The opportunity to coach with Matt Magallon was an opportunity I couldn't pass up on. I was forced to step down as the head baseball coach at Glendale High School to take care of health issues, but was convinced to come to Burroughs in a more limited role on the coaching staff,” said new Burroughs assistant coach and former Glendale High Baseball head coach Frank Taormina. When asked about his familiarity and interactions with players currently on the Bears roster, Taormina called Nate Chapman a heck of a player and that he knows the kind of base runner he is when it comes to stealing bases.

Burroughs will begin the 2024 season at the Dave Moore Baseball Tournament against San Marino on Friday, February 16th with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m. The home opener will take place on Tuesday, February 20th at 6 pm against Covina. Other key dates on the calendar will be when Burroughs begins Pacific League play with league rival Crescenta Valley at home on Tuesday, February 27th at 3:45 p.m. Senior night to honor the graduating class of 2024 will happen on Friday, April 26th against cross-town rival Burbank which will be the 2nd game of the home and home series with the first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m with pregame ceremonies prior.
