Santa Margarita stuns Burroughs 47-33 in CIF Southern Section Division 2A Quarterfinals

The John Burroughs Lady Bears suffered a disappointing loss to the Santa Margarita Lady Eagles by a final score of 47-33 behind a strong 2nd half for the Lady Eagles. While the first half was neck and neck for both teams, Santa Margarita played their best basketball at the right time, to secure the win over a heavily favored Burroughs team that was fresh off a 64-38 win over Aquinas in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Santa Margarita entered the quarterfinals following a 46-43 victory over Buena. Lealine Romain of Santa Margarita led the Lady Eagles with 14 points while Ashley Martin and Valentina Morales combined for 16 points for Burroughs.

The Eagles started the opening quarter by going on a 5-0 score with baskets by Emma Tijanich before Mariam Fahs jumpstarted the Bears offense by nailing down both of her technical free throws at the line following a technical foul on the Santa Margarita bench. The Bears kept pace with the Eagles for most of the 1st quarter with Burroughs trailing by 2 points at the end of the opening quarter. Both teams went neck and neck in the 2nd quarter with effective offenses by both sides with Santa Margarita leading by 1 at the halftime break. Following the halftime break, the Eagles started off the 3rd quarter by going on a 10-0 scoring run with Leilani Romain and Destinity Hamadani helping Santa Margarita gain momentum to start the 2nd half, which carried into the 4th quarter.

“This team has come a long way since the beginning. I’m proud of the development of the young team and will use that as motivation to come back stronger next season,” said Bears coach Vikki Ognayan. Ognayan admitted that the scoring drought in the 3rd quarter hurt the Bears in the loss to Santa Margarita.

The Santa Margarita Lady Eagles will take on Lakewood at home in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A Semifinals on Saturday, February 17th at 7 p.m. The Bears’ season has come to a close with the loss, they finished the 2023-2024 season with a 25-5 overall record with a 12-2 record in Pacific League play.
