Burbank defeats Village Christian 4-2 in season home opener

The Burbank Bulldogs have begun the 2024 season 2-0 with a 4-2 victory over the Village Christian Crusaders in their season home opener. Abigail Kimmer drove in Kaia Mendoza for the go-ahead single in the bottom of the 6th. Kimmer followed up her RBI with steals of 2B, 3B, and home plate to ice the game for the Bulldogs. Maddison Kellogg struck out 7 batters in 5 innings and allowed 1 run, with 2 hits, while Kayla Orosco pitched 2 innings of relief in the victory, allowing 1 run with 1 strikeout and 2 hits. Village Christian entered the contest following an 8-1 win over Calabasas with Burbank coming off a 3-2 win over Providence.

The 1st and 2nd inning provided a pitcher’s duel between Maddison Kellogg and Bre Brennan, with Brennan striking out the side in the bottom of the first and 2nd innings. Kellogg allowed 1 walk in the top half of the 1st and then responded with 2 strikeouts to end the top half of the 1st inning. The Crusaders got the scoring going with a bases-loaded RBI single by Gaby Robel in the top of the 3rd inning to score Bri Ram which was the only run allowed by Kellogg. The Bulldogs scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th with Kara Valencia driving in Eliza Bowren to score the first run for Burbank, followed by Kayla Orosco driving in Valencia to give Burbank a 2-1 lead. Alina Newman hit a clutch game-tying RBI double to score Bri Robel to tie the game at 2. The Bulldogs scored 2 more runs in the bottom of the 6th to break the 2-2 tie with Kayla Orosco pitching a 1-2-3 top of the 7th inning to seal the victory.

“A win is a win but we’ll take it. There are alot of things to work on with some miscommunications in the outfield but our pitching was great,” said Bulldogs head coach Melissa Sanchez. Sanchez stated that Maddison Kellog always gives Burbank the best chance to win when asked about her 7-strikeout performance in 5 innings pitched.

Village Christian falls to 1-1 on the season following the loss to Burbank. The Burbank Bulldogs will take on Royal in the Hart Tournament on Saturday, February 17th at 11 a.m. while the Village Christian Crusaders will host Chaminade on Thursday, February 22nd at 3 p.m.
