John Burroughs Bears Boys Volleyball 2024 Season Preview

Despite a 13-15 overall record with a 7-3 record in Pacific League play, the John Burroughs Bears are looking to improve their mark from last season with lofty goals. Last season the Bears made it to the CIF Southern Section Playoffs and were one-and-done with a loss to South High School in the opening round of the playoffs. Led by veteran head coach Joel Brinton, Burroughs has a coaching staff that is more than capable of developing talent on the roster. Brinton’s coaching staff will feature Edwin Real (frosh head coach/head girls volleyball coach), Trent Cantrell (JV head coach), Dillon Barnes (Assistant JV coach), and varsity assistant coaches Nick Calderon, Choy Jimenez, Sam Tipton, Bryan Felix, and Steven Grandinetti. Real has double duty with both boy’s and girls’ teams with Jimenez entering his first year on Brinton’s coaching staff.

The players to be on the lookout for this season are seniors Henry Carlin (returning all 2nd team Pacific League) Charlie Gerard (reigning Pacific Leagues honorable mention), and juniors Caiden Shrode, Benji Ly, and Nathan Kameya. Those players will be tasked to help Burroughs come out on top in 2024.

“We’re optimistic about what we can accomplish and what we are capable of doing if our guys are consistently focusing on the right things,” said Bears head coach Brinton. Brinton has high praise for his coaching staff and said that he’s taught Coach Jimenez about the team dynamic and admitted that seniors Henry Carlin and Charlie Gerard care alot about the program along with caring about what the teammates do.

Key dates on the calendar for the Burroughs Bears will be on Tuesday, February 20th, when they kick off the 2024 season at home against Claremont with the first serve scheduled for 3:45 p.m., along with both games against cross-town rival Burbank on Thursday, March 7th at Burbank High School and again on Thursday April 4th at John Burroughs High School. Both of those games will be scheduled at 6. p.m. at both Burbank and Burrough’s High Schools. Stay tuned for coverage of the John Burroughs Boys Volleyball Program all season long.
