Granada Hills defeats Garfield in the quarterfinals of the CIF LA City Section Boys’ Soccer Division I Championship.

John Elway Stadium was the venue for the quarter final game between Granada Hills and Garfield on Friday, February 16, 2024. In a game that could have gone in favor of the visitors the supporters of both sides were treated to an evenly matched contest. The Granada Hills Highlanders took the lead scoring in the third minute of the first half. Senior Diego Monreal scored the goal sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Despite being rattled early, the Garfield Bulldogs made an effort to equalize after conceding the quick goal.

In the second half the Bulldogs penetrated the defense of the Highlanders. Every attempt and effort was cleared by Granada Hills. The Bulldogs played with physicality and relied on the play of sophomore Emmanuel Jimenez. However, the creativity and dribbling of Jimenez was not enough for the pace and counter ability of the Highlanders. Garfield attacked with fury and desperation but was unlucky putting shots on target.

The whistle blew at 4:30 p.m. at John Elway Stadium ending Garfield’s run in the playoffs and securing Granada Hills’ place in the semifinal. Assistant Coach Eddie Garcia believes the Highlanders are heading in the right direction “we have to continue working on the things we have been focusing on to play at our potential.”

For Garfield, the result was not what they had hoped but Coach Pablo Serrano appreciates the efforts of his side. “To feel defeat is difficult,” Serrano said, “but a lot of the boys will be playing soccer at the next level. These are learning experiences and hopefully the boys with their next teams are on the winning end.”

Granada Hills advances to the semifinals after defeating Garfield. Granada Hills will face West Valley League rival El Camino Real in the next round of the CIF LA City Section Boys’ Soccer Division I Championship. The Highlanders will take on the Royals at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday Feb, 20 at John Elway Stadium.
