For the second time at John Elway Stadium the Granada Hills Highlanders hosted the Taft Toreadors. Saturday Feb 17, was Dejavu for Granada Hills who was victorious against Taft at home, once again. The final score was 3 - 0 in favor of Granada Hills.

The first goal was scored by junior Ana De Los Santos on a cross inside the box sent in by junior Sophia Harutunian in the first half. The separation came in the second half when goals were scored by senior Hazol Caro on a volley finish from a throw-in by freshman Lliana Velasco and on a header from Ana De Los Santos from a corner-kick whipped in by Velasco for her second assist.

Most of the possession was controlled by Granada Hills throughout the game. The Highlanders played with confidence, testing the Taft attack by resetting the ball back to their backline on every opportunity. Granada would build from the back and invite the Toreadors to press. Once Taft pressed high, the Highlanders would switch the point of attack and drive the ball forward. After the first goal, Taft dropped deep to defend. In the second half Granada was able to get a goal via combination and play and on a corner kick. For much of the second half the ball was on the defensive side of Taft.

Coach Guilherme Mitrovitch is excited about reaching the semi final. Mitrovitch credited Taft for a hard fought game. The success of Granada Hills is based upon the positive culture created within the Highlanders. Mitrovitch thanks assistant Coach Kevin Marroquin for these contributions. He believes the performances of the Highlanders are because of the impact of Coach Marroquin. “I appreciate my leaders. Kevin helps me a lot. I thank him for his positivity.”

Coach Brian Singer is looking forward to the offseason to prepare. Singer believes that Taft has a young core and appreciates that they got playoff experience. “We definitely need to work on our technicality. For our underclassmen keep growing. Take this loss and build for next year.”

Granada Hills moves on to the next round. Granada Hills will face El Camino Real Royals in the next round of the CIF LA City Section Girls’ Soccer Division I Championship. The Highlanders will take on the Royals at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday Feb, 21 at John Elway Stadium.
