Alyssa Rosales hits a go-ahead 2-run RBI single in the bottom of the 6th to help Burroughs defeat La Canada 4-2

After a rough 4-1 loss to Valencia, the John Burroughs Bears bounced back in a positive way to beat the La Canada Spartans 4-2 on a go-ahead 2-run RBI Single by Alyssa Rosales which scored Phoebe Sprangler and Skylar Vanole in the bottom half of the 6th inning. Emerson Colbentz earned the win as she struck out 4 batters in 3 innings pitched in relief with Valentina Reyes going 4 innings with 2 strikeouts in her start.

Riley Labrecque tried to get the offense going in the top of the 1st inning for the Spartans with a leadoff single, but Valentia Reyes found a way to work around traffic with Bently Labreque grounding into a double play and Elle Leckrone grounding out to shortstop. Chloe Cenento and Phoebe Spangler both drove in the game’s first 2 runs with Centeno driving in Earl for the game’s first score and Sprangler driving in Centeno to give the Bears a 2-0 lead in the home half of the 1st inning.

La Canada got on the board in the top of the 3rd inning when Labrecque tripled to left field, but advanced home on an error charged to the left fielder Karlee Earl. The Spartans would strike again in the top of the 6th inning. Elle Leckrone hit a big solo homer to left field to tie the game at 2. The Bears responded in the bottom half of the inning with a big rally to set up the go-ahead score.

Spangler started the bottom of the 6th with a leadoff single followed by a bunt single by Skylar Vanole. Sophia Rangsiyawong then hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Spangler to 3rd base and Vanole to 2nd base. Alyssa Rosales drove in Sprangler and Vanole to give the Bears a 4-2 lead. Colbentz retired the side to seal the victory for Burroughs in the top of the 7th inning.

“Regarding Alyssa Rosales, I was thrilled, she wasn’t in the lineup today but came in as a defensive replacement for Alli Cortez. We executed on a situational ball which set up Rosales to be the hero again,” said Bears coach Doug Nicol. Nicol admitted that Rosales has had early season struggles to start the season, but whenever a big hit is needed the team can count on her to deliver in big moments.

Burroughs improves to 4-2 while La Canada drops to 1-4 on the season. The Bears will play at Etiwanda on Thursday, February 29 following their games at the Hart Tournament this weekend. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:15 p.m..
